2 Tactical Air Force (2TAF) 342 Squadron (Free French) Missing Presumed Killed

Finding the burial sites of these French 2TAF aviators proved to be difficult. It seems that in several cases the available data indicates the place where they fell, not the place where they are buried today. Usually their names appear on the War Memorial in their town of birth. Sometimes their names are on the War Monument in the village near which they fell, and sometimes a Monument has been erected near the crash site. They may be buried in the village near the crash site, or they may not. Their graves may have been relocated to their home towns. If true, then this may be in a War grave, or in a family grave, or even inside the War Monument. Family graves may carry the red, white and blue roundel indicating a War casualty, or they may not. French military fields of honour have registers, but these do not indicate the location of the graves. Furthermore, information on French military headstones is very basic only.

At the time of writing, author has visited 25 of the 42 sites in France, where French 2TAF aviators are believed to be buried. This yielded many Memorials, but only eleven War graves of the 38 that were expected to be found.
