DARLEY F/Lt Cecil Hill DSC&B DFC Born 23 April 1889 in Shropshire; Living in Montreal as engineer on outbreak of war. Passed tests at Curtiss School, Toronto, 1 Sept 1915; to UK on 19 Sept 1916. On 2/3 July 1917. One of his engines having seized whilst he was over Bruges, he dropped his bombs on the objective and managed to fly his machine home on one engine and effected a safe landing on the aerodrome. Serving Served w/ No.14 (N) Sqn, Dunkirk. On 18/19 Feb 1918 flying HP bomber #3129, this officer carried out two bombing attacks on St.Denis Westrem aerodrome, this being the longest double trip successfully performed up to date by any of our aeroplanes. On 28 Sept 1919 flying London to Cairo he hit tree on take-off Near Lake Bracciano; aircraft caught fire. Kifa

DAVEY P/O T.D.H. DFC Canadian Served w/ 12 sqn On 12 May 1940 part of a volunteer attack by 5 Battles against the Vroenhoven bridge near Maastricht. he flew L5241 w/ Sgt Mansell and LAC Gordon Patterson (Canadian). He dove on the bridge, was hit by flak in the fuel tank; he ordered the crew to bale out, and finally crash-landed near his base. Mansell baled out safely and returned. Patterson was wia and pow. They had claimed 2 Bf-109s probables ???

On 8 Jan 1944 flying a Laong range sweep N of Paris, he claims a twin-engined german transport shared s/d w/ P/O Dickie from no.245 Sqn. W/Co Flying w/ 143 Typhoon wing from 23 Jan til 8 May 1944. (Nos 438, 439 and 440 Sqns). On 20 March 1944 he leads three pilots from No.438 Sqn to strafe targets between Cherbourg and Alderney. On 27 March 1944 he led 9 Typhoons from No.439 Sqn to the Cotentin. On 8 May 1944 leading 438 Sqn on a raid on the Douai marshalling yard, force-landed in France after engine failure, was reported Mia. DENNIS 2/Lt James Gordon DFC home in Toronto. On a recent bombing raid this officer was engaged in a formation which was attacked by twenty of the enemy and in the ensuing fight he was severely wounded. He at once signalled to his observer to take charge of the machine, but the observer had also been wounded and was unable to comply. Lieutenant Dennis decided that his duty demanded that he should remain with his formation to the end of the battle, and this he did, notwithstanding the loss of blood from his wounds. He succeeded in bringing his machine back to our lines - a distance of over forty miles

Killed 28 September 1919 Near Lake Bracciano, flying London to Cairo; hit tree on take-off; aircraft caught fire. On the night of the 2nd July 1917. One of his engines having seized whilst he was over Bruges, he dropped his bombs on the objective and managed to fly his machine home on one engine and effected a safe landing on the aerodrome. Serving with No.14 (N) Squadron, Dunkirk. On the night of 18th/19th February flying HP bomber 3129, this officer carried out two bombing attacks on St.Denis Westrem aerodrome, this being the longest double trip successfully performed up to date by any of our aeroplanes.

DONKERSLEY F/Lt Harry Woodward DFC&B Born in 1920 Home in Powell River, British Columbia or Moosomin, Sask.; enlisted in Vancouver 9 January 1941. Trained at No.2 ITS (graduated 20 June 1941), No.5 EFTS (graduated 8 August 1941), and No.7 SFTS (graduated 23 October 1941). To 7 OTU, 11 May 1942; to 69 Sqn (Malta), 6 September 1942; achieved much success against enemy shipping. October 1942, he attacked a tanker, inflicting severe damage. A few nights later he located and attacked a convoy of four merchant ships escorted by several destroyers. After making his attack he returned to base, rearmed and made a second attack. Early next morning reconnaissance aircraft carried [out] a search over a wide area in the vicinity of the attack and observed that three of the enemy ships were missing. Some nights later attacked one of two ships escorted by destroyers, setting the vessel on fire. Later it was learned that the ship had sunk. One night in November 1942 he captained an aircraft detailed to drop flares over Italian naval units and accomplished his task successfully. Several nights later he attacked and sank a small merchant vessel. On another night in December 1942, he participated in an operation against an important enemy convoy in the Mediterranean. As a result, other air and surface forces were enabled to strike successfully. Two merchant vessels were sunk and one badly damaged. to UK, 8 March 1943. Served w/ 32 O.T.U. Commissioned December 1940. Arrived in UK, December 1940. No.40 Squadron, 19 March to 12 August 1941. In July 1941, large scale attacks were made on German warships at Brest and La Pallice (including the "Gneisenau", "Scharnhorst" and "Prince Eugene"). A smaller attack was made on Cherbourg. The operations were carried out in daylight and extremely heavy and accurate anti-aircraft fire and fighter opposition were encountered by all aircraft when approaching the targets, which at Brest were protected by a balloon barrage. The aircrews engaged succeeded, nevertheless, in securing direct hits on their objectives and in inflicting very severe damage in the target area. During the combats with enemy fighters, 21 hostile aircraft were destroyed and others were severely damaged.

DUNLOP, W/C Gordon Parker AFC Central Flying School, Trenton Enrolled as Provisional Pilot Officer, 8 June 1931; appears to have been placed in reserve until re-appointed, 13 June 1935 at University of Saskatchewan; awarded wings at Camp Borden 26 May 1936. On 11 September 1939, Wing Commander Dunlop was Chief Flying Instructor with the Flying Instructors' School, Camp Borden. He remained with this school as Chief Flying Instructor when it was moved to Trenton, and on re- organization of the school in March, 1940, became Assistant Chief Flying Instructor, retaining such duties in Central Flying School until September 1940, when he was appointed Chief Flying Instructor. In March 1940 [1941 ?] he was posted to No.3 SFTS, Calgary, as Chief Instructor, and reported to Trenton as Officer Commanding, Central Flying School, in April 1941.

On 16 Sept 1918 engaged w/ 12 e/a they claim two vict and one shared s/d. There is some confusion about this man, owing to there being several Harold Edwards in the air forces. This one may (or may not) have the MM. DND file 745-E-41 contains correspondence re 2nd Lieutenant Harold Leslie Edwards, DFC, as Department wanted to deliver to him his DFC. He was thought to be in Franktown, but the search appears to have been unsuccessful. He flew in No.20 Sqn with two other Canadians - Captain H.P. Lale and Lieutenant W.M. Thomson; his name was given variously as H. Edwards and H.L. Edwards. Hospitalized on 26 October 1918; to England on 31 October 1918. May have claimed 9 vict Corporal H.L. Edwards awarded MM, 28 May 1917; could this be the man ? For long victory list see Air 1/168/15/156/6 in MG.40 D.1 Vol.5.

EVANS S/L Arthur Ephraim AFC Instructor w/ No.10 AOS Born at Allanford, Ontario, 20 October 1911; educated at Own Sound, Stratford, and University of Western Ontario. Teacher. Enlisted in London, Ontario, 22 August 1941. Trained at No.5 ITS (graduated 4 April 1942) and No.9 AOS (graduated 24 March 1943).

EVANS F/L Colin John Overseas Born 21 January 1920 in Hamilton, Ontario. Enlisted there, 24 June 1940. Trained at No.2 ITS, No.10 EFTS and No.5 SFTS (wings awarded 29 January 1941). Instructed at No.3 SFTS (April 1941 to February 1942) and No.16 SFTS (February 1942 to July 1943). Trained at No.36 OTU, Greenwood, then sent overseas, October 1943. Further trained at No.60 OTU. Served in No.418 Squadron, 11 February to 17 August 1944 (1.5 aircraft and eight V-1s destroyed). Returned to Canada, September 1944, serving at No.7 OTU, Debert, 5 October 1944 to 20 July 1945. Released 11 September 1945 but served in postwar RCAF.

EVANS W/Co E.H. Lysander pilot, XO w/ 110 RCAF Sqn posted to UK in Feb 1940 Becomes S/L, OC of the unit when W/Co Van Vliet is returned to Canada Promoted W/Co a few weeks later and posted to Ottawa.

EVANS P/O Earle Robert DFC No.90 Squadron Born in Winnipeg, 1921; home there; enlisted there 2 April 1941. Trained at No.2 ITS (graduated 4 October 1941), No.14 EFTS (graduated 29 November 1941) and No.4 BGS (graduated30 March 1942). Commissioned 1943. Crashed upon return from his 5th sortie. Returned to combat.

EVANS F/O Frederick William DFC US-AM No.421 Squadron Born in Saint John, Nnew Brunswick, 1919; home in St.Thomas (clerk and salesman). Enlisted in Saint John, 17 February 1939. Trained at No.1 ITS (graduated 2 April 1943), No.7 EFTS (graduated 28 May 1943) and No.14 SFTS (graduated 1 October 1943). Commissioned July 1943. Postwar Vampire aerobatic pilot; served in Korea with USAF While flying over France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, he has destroyed or damaged large numbers of enemy road transport vehicles, five locomotives and fifty railway goods wagons. He has also destroyed one enemy aircraft and shared in the destruction of another.

EVANS F/O George Typhoon pilot w/ No.609 Sqn On 16 Jan 1943 part of a fight w/ two Fw-190s between North foreland and Dungeness. He claims one damaged. On 4 April 1943 part of an attack on an R-Boat flakship off Boulogne, putting it on fire. Typhoon pilot w/ No.183 Sqn On 6 June 1944 he leads an element and they are attacked by twelve Bf-109s. They loose three typhoons piloted by F/Lt Evans, F/O Gee and F/O Taylor.

Home in Macleod, AB (ranching and government-appointed Range Rider; described as "a keen sportsman and fine horseman" as well as polo player); served in 19th Alberta Dragoons (joined day after war declared); went overseas with First Contingent (Divisional Cavalry); may have been a despatch rider; Sgt, joins RFC on 13 Sept 1915 Posted 2/Lt(Observer) on 13 Dec 1915; to Home Establishment on 26 Jan 1916; Flying Officer, 15 May 1916. EVANS P/O Peter Bruce Lloyd From Hamilton, Born in 1921 Served w/ 81 Sqn On 29 July 1942 flying a Spitfire, he is s/d 15m NE of Dunkirk. Kia.

EVANS F/L Robert Ernest DFC Born in Swastika, Ontario, 1920; home in Cleveland, Ohio. Enlisted in North Bay, 24 October 1940. Trained at No.1 ITS (graduated 16 May 1941), No.10 EFTS (graduated 3 July 1941) and No.1 SFTS (graduated 13 September 1941). Commissioned 1942. Flew two tours. Served w/ 417 Sqn On 15 August 1944 he led a formation of aircraft with outstanding skill in an attack on a railroad bridge near Bologna. The bridge was damaged and three nearby trains were also attacked. Despite intense anti-aircraft fire On 15 September 1944, Flight Lieutenant Evans located and bombed enemy mechanical transport at Faetano. He then circled below heavy cloud through aircraft fire while he directed the rest of the formation to the attack.

EVANS F/O Robert William From Niagara Falls. Born in 1918 Trainee at 60 O.T.U. On 25 Nov 1944 flying Mosquito LR384, they crashes at sea off Bridport, Dorset. Both crews kifa.

EVERARD F/Lt Hedley Joseph DFC Served w/ 417 Sqn Born in Timmins, Ontario, 1919; home there. Served in Algonquin Rifles, 1938. Enlisted in Toronto, 24 September 1940. Trained at No.2 ITS (graduated 20 February 1941), No.2 EFTS (graduated 22 April 1941) and No.32 SFTS (graduated 15 July 1941). Served in England, Far East and Middle East. Served w/ 401 Sqn On 5 Oct 1944 S/L RIA Smith, F/Lt H Everard,F/Lt R Davenport, F/O J MacKay, F/O A Sinclair claim a Me-262 s/d. The enemy jet crashes SW of Nijmegen. it is piloted by Hptm Hans-Christof Buttmann from I/KG(J) 51 who is kia. S/L, OC 401 Sqn, 4-25 December 1944; Scored 3 vict, incl two in the Anzio area. On 25 Dec 1944 he leads his unit's Spitfires over Duisburg. He claims a Bf-109 s/d but the debris destroy his Spitfire, he is made prisoner. Liberated by Russians and was back in England in time for victory celebrations. With Canadair in postwar period, commencing 1949 as a test pilot; by about 1956 he had become Director, Tactical Aircraft Military Relations with the firm.

EVES Sgt Elden US From Syracuse, NY. Born in 1922 Trainee at 56 O.T.U. On 21 June 1942 flying Hurricane W9206 at very low level, he hit HT wires, crashes at Fairfield Farm, Clenchwarton, Norfolk. He is Kifa.

EWART G/C Frederick James DFC Trained as pilot from March 1929 at Camp Borden, Ont. Station Gaspe Born in Clinton, Ontario. Enlisted in CAF as mechanic, 28 September 1923. Fitter until 1929, when he trained as a pilot. Over ten years he flew extensively on photo, forest dusting, air mail and other operations. Commissioned 1 February 1939 and posted to No.6 (BR) Sqn, Vancouver. In March 1941, with rank of Squadron Leader, joined No.120 (BR) Sqn, Patricia Bay. In May 1942 went briefly to No.1 BGS; joined No.117 RCAF Sqn; took command of No.5 (BR) Sqn as a Wing Commander, January 1943, which he led with distinction through arduous period. From October 1943 to August 1945 he commanded at Gaspe, Commander Station Gander, August 1945 to April 1946,

EWER F/Lt Harold Frederick DFC From kelowna BC, Born in 1918 Joins RCAF on 13 June 1941.
