NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Our hosting service imposes a 4-character search minimum for database tables. We have modified our databases to support 3-character name searches.

Add 'x' to 3-character name: e.g. to search for 'coe' put 'coex' in search box, for 'fox' put 'foxx'.

If you need help, EMAIL us with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.
To search on squadron, append 'Sqn'. Examples: '72Sqn' or '416Sqn'

Paradie Archive DatabaseOn 20–21 December, the target was Frankfurt. Frankfurt. 650 aircraft, 41 losses (6.3%). The German controllers were able to accurately plot the route as soon as the main force left the English coast and were therefore able to deploy night-fighters at many points along its route. A diversionary raid on Mannheim failed to draw off many fighters until the main raid was over. The target was mainly cloud covered whereas the forecast had predicted clear conditions. Marking did not, therefore, go to plan. The Germans used both decoy fires and also decoy target indicator. By a twist of good fortune, considerable creepback resulted in the bombing coming back over the city. Many public and municipal buildings were hit including many schools. 23000 people were bombed out of their homes. Three Danes were part of the raid: Fg Off. Niels Erik Westergaard and both Sondergaard brothers. This was Sondergaard’s final operation. The crew failed to return. Halifax V LK644/ZL-C took off from RAF Station Leeming at 16.15 hours, and nothing was heard from the crew following take off. The crew of seven was killed. Shot down by a night-fighter flown by Hptm. Martin Becker and crashed at Weilmünster/Hessen. Several crews from the squadron were either attacked by or observed enemy fighters, and crews reported intense flak opposition and search lights.

Son of James and Margaret Briffett, of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada.

Missing Air Crew Report - MACR 12283. ROSE OF YORK.

1944-07-06 In honour and presence of Her Royal Highness The Princess Elizabeth, the Boeing B-17G-55-BO Flying Fortress #42-102547, is christened 'Rose of York' (*). The ceremony is held at USAAF Station 111, RAF Thurleigh. (*) Previously named 'Princess Elizabeth', then 'The Princess', before becoming 'Rose of York' during this baptism. These precautions are taken in order to avoid setbacks to the bomber who would certainly not have been spared by the German fighters who would have glorified the fact of shooting him down... That said, this B-17 was damaged -Two engines lost- during a mission over Berlin on February 3, 1945. Last seen over the North Sea while trying to return. All occupants of the aircraft, including a BBC journalist were missing and presumed killed.
