Having two burning engines, which were extinguished after some time, - on the other two engines, completely shot like a sieve, in the darkness returned to the base. Slowly gaining altitude, he made his way through the Carpathians to return to the Brindisi airport. Landing on the runway, the brakes were found to be inoperative. Reaching the end of the runway, at the last moment the pilot steered the machine sideways towards the bushy rocky ground where, losing the landing gear, he settled down. The entire crew: Cpt. On that day, 4 planes with drops to Warsaw departed, 3 Halifax (JD171, JD362 and JN895) and 1 Liberator (JR927), which only managed to return to Brindisi. The aircraft took-off late afternoon, with the weather forecast indicating good conditions and patchy cloud. En-route the Pilot descended to 700 feet to avoid hazy conditions and then called for a course to steer to his base at Jurby. Shortly after the aircraft struck high ground, and four of the five occupants were killed or died shortly afterwards. The Survivor, Warrant Officer Raymond Charles Jones, who was severely injured in the leg crawled to get help. He was later awarded the George Medal for this attempt.
