Data derived from many sources. Corrections/Additions welcomed via Helpdesk

NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary

1942-09-19HalifaxIIR9383ZA-AMelbourne1927SaarbruckenThis crew released their bombs over the target and made for home without incident. It is of note that the pilot was not experienced in flying this type of a/c. On returning to Yorkshire they overshot their base by some distance and became lost, the a/c eventually struck a tree standing on high ground. Here available sources vary greatly, one states this was near Thruscross village, to the west of Harrogate. Another source suggests this was nearer Grassington - some miles away. This tree strike damaged the port aileron which caused the a/c to fly to starboard. Left with little option the pilot attempted to get the a/c as high as possible before ordering his crew to bale out. After climbing to about 700ft all the crew baled out. The a/c is believed to have continued fro a while before crashing at 0245hrs a mile or so W of West End (Thruscross) village and was totally destroyed. The resulting clear up pretty much wiped the site clean with it being so close to an access road. The area was also on the edge of a military practice range and military personnel would have been on the scene very quickly. The cause of the crash was the rudder overbalance problem that is known to have afflicted many early HalifaxesInjured Paradie Archive Database
