NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Our hosting service imposes a 4-character search minimum for database tables. We have modified our databases to support 3-character name searches.

Add 'x' to 3-character name: e.g. to search for 'coe' put 'coex' in search box, for 'fox' put 'foxx'.

If you need help, EMAIL us with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.
To search on squadron, append 'Sqn'. Examples: '72Sqn' or '416Sqn'

1942-03-28WellingtonIIIX3477VR-GMildenhall2000LubeckClaim by Uffz Karl Merk 5/NJG2 - Sea 14km NW of Langeoog (Jaguar or Wal) at 2316. Also claimed by 2/schw Flak Abt 161 and by Flak Ugruko Nord (II Marine Flak Brigade) (Wellington near Voslapp 0100). Marine Flak claim confirmed as 33rd confirmed victory of II Marine Flak. This was confirm by OKL on 28 July 1943. Claim by Uffz Merk not listed in OKL/RLM 5/NJG2. (Nachtjagd Combat Archives 1942 - Theo Boiten)PoW No.24805 Stalag 344 Lamsdorf Paradie Archive DatabaseThe a/c was intercepted on the way to the target by two Luftwaffe ME-110 night fighters coming at them head on. One nightfighter was dealt with by the nose gunner Flt Sgt Bailey and then Plt Off Brodrick, the rear gunner, also engaged the fighter as it came under his guns. It was noted that the cockpit of the enemy a/c was damaged and one engine was on fire as the fighter fell out of sight. During the attack, cannon fire from the ME110 damaged controls and put the rear turret out of action. The results of the gunfire also wounded the pilot Plt Off Hobson who still managed to jettison the bombs and fly the a/c. Flt Sgt Flesch was severely wounded. The a/c was badly damaged by the attack the use of dive manoeuvres helped to shake off the last fighter. This manoeuvre brought the a/c into range of what was initially light flak. The flak increased the further they strayed. With his controls becoming less responsive Plt Off Hobson was not able to stop the additional damage being inflicted by the flak. The Wellington was reported to have impacted at a high rate of speed into a marshy area near Wilhelmshaven Germany.
Details given later by Flt Sgt Bailey describes that X3477's nose section broke off on impact and the centre section of the Wellington spun around and skidded backwards. While the rear section was thrown a distance from the main sections.
