NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Born on the 04th December 1919 at Opotiki. Employed as a shop assistant in the family grocery and hardware business, Shalfoon and Francis Ltd. 06th July 1941 found Charles Shalfoon in Levin, with the Royal New Zealand Air Force Initial Training Wing, to train as an Airman Pilot. He moved on to No. 2 Elementary Flying School on the 16th August 1941, before embarking for Canada, on the 20th October 1941, for further experience. He was attached to the Royal Canadian Air Force, on the 04th November 1941, working at the Service Flying Training School. he was awarded his Pilots Badge and promotion to Sergeant on the 27th February 1942, in Nova Scotia. He then embarked to the United Kingdom, on the 14th March 1942, to be attached to the Royal Air Force. 5 Arriving at the Personnel Reception centre on the 28th March 1942.

He was then posted to the Pilots Advanced Flying Unit, on the 20th May 1942. By the end of the following month he was flying Wellingtons at an Operational Training Unit. He joined 75 Squadron on the 22nd September 1942, and flew three air operations. Son of Anthony (died 13th August 1945, age 66) and Amine (died 24th February 1972, age 92) Shalfoon, of Opotiki, Auckland, New Zealand.

Born on the 23rd February 1915 at Huntly. Worked as a plumber for G. C Richards of Whangarei. Enlisted at Levin on the 04th May 1941. Initial training at No. 4 Elementary Flying Training School joining on the 14th June 1941 then to No. 3 Flying Training School on 26th July 1941. Pilots badge awarded on the 18th October 1941 and promoted to sergeant.

Embarked for England on the 17th November 1941. After serving with various units joined 11 Operational Training Unit on the 24th March 1942. Joined 75 squadron on the 12th August 1942. Son of George Edward Sharman (died 31st May 1980), and of Ada Helen Sharman (nee Carseldine - died 23rd August 1958), of Whangarei, Auckland, New Zealand. A total of 294 flying hours logged and on his 04th operational sortie.

1942-05-22WellingtonIIIZ1566AA-KFeltwellTraining The a/c was on a night cross country flight when according the accident card they had flown into un-forecast bad weather and while trying to descend through the cloud to determine their position the a/c struck the ground near Grindon and broke up over a wide area with the front end of the a/c being the most broken up section. Of the parts found at the crash site that were identifiable most were from the cockpit area, they were spread across almost the entire field indicating the front end of the aircraft was completely destroyed as the a/c slid across the field. The New Zealand personnel who were killed in the crash were all buried on the 28th May 1942 at Buxton Cemetery, the service was conducted by 28 Maintenance Unit, whose medical staff had also attended the crash site.
