NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Our hosting service imposes a 4-character search minimum for database tables. We have modified our databases to support 3-character name searches.

Add 'x' to 3-character name: e.g. to search for 'coe' put 'coex' in search box, for 'fox' put 'foxx'.

If you need help, EMAIL us with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.
To search on squadron, append 'Sqn'. Examples: '72Sqn' or '416Sqn'

1942-11-06StirlingIR9201LS-UBournGardening, River GirondeAt 2145 local time, still on its outward journey over France, the Stirling was hit by flak whilst flying at low level. According to locals, the a/c appeared to be attempting a crash landing on the marshes near St Andre-des Eaux, making a gradual descent until it hit a row of trees and cartwheeled into the ground, disintegrating but not catching fire. The crew of eight were killed instantly. Because the a/c crashed at a shallow angle, most of the wreckage was left on the surface of the soft ground and was easily recovered, but the four Bristol Hercules XI engines carried on across the marsh, the furthest one was found 500 metres from the main impact pointKilledEscoublac-la-Baule War Cemetery Plot 2 Row D Grave 16The airmen were gathered for burial by local people, and they were laid to rest together at Escoublac la Baule War Cemetery on 9 Nov 1942. 1942-05-22WellingtonIIIZ1566AA-KFeltwellTraining The a/c was on a night cross country flight when according the accident card they had flown into un-forecast bad weather and while trying to descend through the cloud to determine their position the a/c struck the ground near Grindon and broke up over a wide area with the front end of the a/c being the most broken up section. Of the parts found at the crash site that were identifiable most were from the cockpit area, they were spread across almost the entire field indicating the front end of the aircraft was completely destroyed as the a/c slid across the field.
