NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Our hosting service imposes a 4-character search minimum for database tables. We have modified our databases to support 3-character name searches.

Add 'x' to 3-character name: e.g. to search for 'coe' put 'coex' in search box, for 'fox' put 'foxx'.

If you need help, EMAIL us with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.
To search on squadron, append 'Sqn'. Examples: '72Sqn' or '416Sqn'

Citation reads: "Bar to Distinguished Service Order. Acting Wing Commander Reginald Wilfred REYNOLDS, D.S.O., D.F.C. (40259), Reserve of Air Force Officers, No! 139 Squadron. Distinguished Service Order. Acting Squadron Leader William Walter BLESSING. D.F.C. (Aus.404648), Royal Australian Air Force, No. 105 Squadron. Acting Flight Lieutenant Edward Barnes SISMORE, D.F.C. (130208), Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, No. 139 Squadron. Distinguished Flying Cross. Flying Officer Forrest Martin FISHER (121787), Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, No. 105 Squadron. Distinguished Flying Medal. 1379594 Flight Sergeant Leslie HOGAN, No. 105 Squadron. On the 27th May, 1943. a force of bombers were detailed to attack targets at Jena, Germany, in daylight. The operation called for a high degree of skill and necessitated a flight over strongly defended areas and difficult terrain. Whilst still a considerable distance from the target, the weather deteriorated and visibility became very poor. Nevertheless, the objective, far away in enemy territory was reached according to plan. In spite of balloon defences, and in the face of fierce antiaircraft fire, a low level attack was pressed home with great vigour. The success achieved reflects the greatest credit on the efforts of the abovenamed personnel who took part in the operation in various capacities, as members of aircraft crews. Their skill, courage and determination were of a high order."

DFC awarded whilst with 105 Sqn, gazetted 6th April 1943. Citation reads: "Acting Flight Lieutenant William Walter BLESSING (Aus.404648), Royal Australian Air Force, No. 105 Squadron. In March, 1943, this officer flew the leading aircraft of a bomber force detailed to undertake a low level attack on the railway workshops at Paderborn. The operation, involving a deep penetration into Germany in daylight, demanded a high degree of efficiency. That the sortie was executed exactly as planned and success achieved was largely attributable to Flight Lieutenant Blessing's fine leadership and great skill. This officer has taken part in 17 sorties, all of them in daylight, invariably displaying great determination and efficiency. On two occasions he has flown his badly damaged aircraft back to base."

Son of Walter Clinton Blessing and Elizabeth Mary Blessing, of Braidwood, New South Wales, Australia; husband of Audrey Pamela Blessing, of Stanmore, Middlesex, England.

1943-12-29LancasterIIIJB607AR:NBinbrook17:03BerlinOn return leg the a/c was attacked by a night fighter north of Aachen. Sgt Seery saw tracer passing and the Lancaster was hit in the nose. The Plt.Off. Ireland immediately dived to port and during the dive the a/c was hit again by many shells. Four of the crew were believed to have been killed in the second attack. The a/c caught fire and all four engines were disabled. Plt.Off. Ireland managed to level the a/c and remained at the controls to give the surviving crew the time to bale out. Sgt Seery, and Sgt Squire, tried to open the escape hatch but it jammed and took some time to open. When they opened it Sgt Seery baled out but Sgt Squire went back to help Plt.Off. Ireland. A few seconds after Sgt Seery got out the a/c exploded and crashed into the grounds of a monastery at Bleijerheide, near Kerkrade in The Netherlands.

Post war records indicate that that JB607 was shot down by a Messerschmitt Bf110g from 2./NJG1 flown by Oberfeldwebel Heinrich Oloff who survived the war having 14 night victories recorded. He died at Christmas 1999. However, this aircraft was also claimed by Flak of 3./schw. Flak Abt 465 and 4./schw. Flak Abt. 381. The claim by Lt. Oloff not listed in OKL/RLM 2./NJG confirmed Abschussübersicht. Probably rejected and victory credited to Flak. PoW No 3342, Stalag Luft 3 Sagan & Belaria

Flt.Lt. Boag’s statement of the circumstances of the loss of the aircraft. "Reaching turn onto target, flew radius of action to waste time and returned. Had just reached turn again picking up datum for timed run when W/Op reported fighter 100 yards astern closing on his equipment. Acknowledged by rear gunner. Nothing furthermore few seconds when cannon shell hit us ahead of my position. Bomb Aimer stood up and asked the pilot to open bomb doors to jettison. Just then I together with Bomb Aimer was thrown forward and knocked out. On regaining my senses found I was sitting on the instrument panel with head against perspex. Starboard wing well alight and both motors feathered. We seemed to be going straight down so I bailed out where the side had been blown away. At approx 2000 feet I saw the plane hit immediately ablaze all over. I could not see if the skipper was still in his seat or not. I believe he was hit in the first attack and while I was out he succeeded in feathering both starboard motors and I think getting rid of the bomb load apart from markers which were selected off. I did not know who had got out but was afterwards told by the Germans I was the only survivor. This I am convinced was due to Starboard engines being feathered enabling me to get out there. This was done by the skipper F/O J C H Davies on his own as the Engineer was in the nose at the time of the attack. I would like to place on record his actions while wounded and also his attempt to put the fire out and I personally think that some recognition should be made."

Promoted to Flt.Lt. whilst as a PoW (4 February 1945)
