NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Awarded his navigators badge on the 18th April 1942 and promoted to sergeant. Embarked for England on the 28th May 1943. After conversion training at 60 and 63 Operational Training Units joined 488 squadron on the 07th December 1943. Born on the 20th November 1921 at Te Awamutu. Worked as a farmer on his fathers farm at Mangapiko prior to service. Served in the territorial army for 3 years. Enlisted on the 01st April 1942 at Rongota. Initial training at No. 1 Elementary Flying Training School. Embarked for Canada on the 24th December 1942. Further training at No. 6 Service Flying Training School, Dunnville, Ontario. Pilots badge and commissioned on the 28th May 1943.

Embarked for England on the 23rd June 1943. Joined 17 Pilot Advanced Flying Unit on the 24th August 1943. Embarked for Egypt on the on the 18th February 1944. Further training at No. 71 Operational Training Unit. Finally going 6 squadron on the 04th July 1944.

Son of Edward Alexander and Eileen Myrtle Clarke (née Findlay), of Mangapiko, Auckland, New Zealand. A total of 433 flying hours logged and on his 14 operational sortie.
