NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Our hosting service imposes a 4-character search minimum for database tables. We have modified our databases to support 3-character name searches.

Add 'x' to 3-character name: e.g. to search for 'coe' put 'coex' in search box, for 'fox' put 'foxx'.

If you need help, EMAIL us with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.
To search on squadron, append 'Sqn'. Examples: '72Sqn' or '416Sqn'

A total of 641 flying hours logged and on his 57th operational sortie.

Only Kiwi among the 14 servicemen buried at the small Midvaag Military Cemetery in the Faroes.

Tail gunner recounts aircraft had taken off from its base in Wick, Scotland, and that a combination of fog and radio silence meant the crew could not establish their location and the aircraft crashed into the mountainside. The survivor made his way down hill and met a group of shepherds. Some helped him down to the British army base in the village of Tvoroyri, while others went to the burning aircraft. Haeusler was still alive so they carried him by stretcher to the little village hospital, but he died the following day. He and his crewmates were buried a few days later. Remnants of the aircraft wreck remain on the mountainside, and the story of the crash has been passed on through generations of islanders.

Haeusler, known as "Jack", was one of three brothers raised in Ruatoki and educated in Opotiki. He gained his wings in 1940 and was engaged to be married when he went to war in late 1940.

1942-11-06StirlingIR9201LS-UBournGardening, River GirondeAt 2145 local time, still on its outward journey over France, the Stirling was hit by flak whilst flying at low level. According to locals, the a/c appeared to be attempting a crash landing on the marshes near St Andre-des Eaux, making a gradual descent until it hit a row of trees and cartwheeled into the ground, disintegrating but not catching fire. The crew of eight were killed instantly. Because the a/c crashed at a shallow angle, most of the wreckage was left on the surface of the soft ground and was easily recovered, but the four Bristol Hercules XI engines carried on across the marsh, the furthest one was found 500 metres from the main impact pointKilledEscoublac-la-Baule War Cemetery Plot 2 Row D Grave 15The airmen were gathered for burial by local people, and they were laid to rest together at Escoublac la Baule War Cemetery on 9 Nov 1942.
