NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Our hosting service imposes a 4-character search minimum for database tables. We have modified our databases to support 3-character name searches.

Add 'x' to 3-character name: e.g. to search for 'coe' put 'coex' in search box, for 'fox' put 'foxx'.

If you need help, EMAIL us with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.
To search on squadron, append 'Sqn'. Examples: '72Sqn' or '416Sqn'

Johnson was shot whilst attempting to escape from Stalag Luft 3A Luckenwalde with J88362 Fg Off Percy Crosswell (who died the following day) (Read Archive Report). The Russians liberated the camp a few days later. At around 23:00, during an air raid on Potsdam, three airmen, against the advice of the Escape Committee, attempted to escape through the wire on the north side of the camp: Fg Off. P.B. Crosswell RCAF, Sgt. Allan McNaught RCAF, and nineteen-year-old Flt Sgt. G.R. Johnson. They were seen and shots were fired. Sgt Allan MacNaught managed to get back to his billet undetected, but Johnson was killed immediately. Fg Off. Percy Crosswell did not die until 13:00 hrs on 14 April. A Canadian airman 'spoke to the German guard who shot Crosswell, a rather old fellow, and asked why he had done it with the war's end so close and the guard just burst into tears and said "Why did he try and escape? The war is over". The rumour was that Johnson had attacked a guard with a bottle, and had been shot as a result. One unsympathetic Wg Cdr. commented: 'Bloody fools.' (The Long Road by Oliver Clutton-Brock).

1944-01-20HalifaxVLK656WL-CCroft1625BerlinJust as the a/c was releasing it's load of incendiaries at 19,000 feet it was hit twice by flak. The first hit towards the rear of the bomb bay and the second hit the fuselage near the wing root. The resulting damage was severe; the rudder control was sheared off, there was no oxygen supply or electrics from the rest position backwards, all the a/c aerials were missing and some of the electronics were destroyed. The a/c stayed in the air, the remainder of the bomb load was jettisoned although a number of remaining incendiaries caught fire in the bomb bay and filled the cockpit with smoke. This fire was later put out and the pilot made for home using only aileron controls to steer the a/c. The engines had not been damaged and there was no problem to the speed or height being lost. As the a/c reached the British coastline the intercom between the pilot and the wireless operator failed and soon after crossing the coast with the pilot beginning to loose control and out of fuel they abandoned the a/c somewhere in the Driffield area. There is a suggestion that the a/c continued on its own way for a period before crashing somewhere in the Flixton area to the west of Filey at 2359 hrs Some of the crew suffered heavy landings. (Aircraft Accidents in Yorkshire) Injured - sustained head injuries

Top British Ace of War

In 1940 Johnson had an operation to reset his collarbone which severly restricted his flying till 1941 when he and began flying regularly. He took part in the offensive sweeps over German-occupied Europe from 1941 to 1944, almost without rest. Johnson was involved in heavy aerial fighting during this period. His combat tour included participation in the Dieppe Raid, Combined Bomber Offensive, Battle of Normandy, Operation Market Garden, the Battle of the Bulge and the Western Allied invasion of Germany. Johnson progressed to the rank of Group Captain by the end of the war and Air Vice Marshal subsequently.

Johnson was credited with 34 individual victories over enemy aircraft, as well as seven shared victories, three shared probable, 10 damaged, three shared damaged and one destroyed on the ground. Johnson flew 700 operational sorties and engaged enemy aircraft on 57 occasions. Included in his list of individual victories were 14 Messerschmitt Bf 109s and 20 Focke-Wulf Fw 190s destroyed making him the most successful RAF ace against the Fw 190. This score made him the highest scoring Western Allied fighter ace against the German Luftwaffe.

The bomber began to lose height, slowly at first, but then went out of control and blew up before hitting the ground at the village of Leulinghem, 7km South-West of St Omer in the Pas de Calais — still carrying their bomb load.Injured/diedLonguenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery Plot 3. Paradie Archive DatabaseThey began their bombing run at just before 17:00, on a straight and level approach the aircraft was hit by flak, and Bill King was killed instantly. The port inner engine burst into flames and the pilot called for the crew to bail out. Two of the crew, the Navigator and the Bomb-aimer managed to bale out and became PoWs. Bill King's body was flung from the aircraft as it crashed in flames near the French village of Leulingham. The wireless operator was pulled from the wreckage with broken limbs as was one of the air gunners (Johnstone) but he died in hospital in St Omer a few hours later. The pilot and two other gunners both died in the crash. The Germans moved in quickly to secure the prisoners and remove the bodies, except Bill King whose body was not discovered until a few weeks later lying in a cornfield. later the three bodies were dumped at Leulingham church, where a local resistance worker arranged a funeral.

Plt Off Johnston was awarded the DFC whilst with 619 Squadron. Gazetted 27 June 1944

Son of James Craig and Jean (née Macfadyen) Johnston. Husband to Marion (née Howard) Johnston from Englehart. Ontario, Canada.
