NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Our hosting service imposes a 4-character search minimum for database tables. We have modified our databases to support 3-character name searches.

Add 'x' to 3-character name: e.g. to search for 'coe' put 'coex' in search box, for 'fox' put 'foxx'.

If you need help, EMAIL us with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.
To search on squadron, append 'Sqn'. Examples: '72Sqn' or '416Sqn'

1944-11-16HalifaxIIIMZ408C8:XRAF Leconfield12:41JulichThe crew released their bomb load onto the target area at 15:30 from 14,000 feet and while over the target area the aircraft was struck by flak which damaged the port wing. Four other 640 Squadron aircraft were damaged by flak on this raid. After leaving the target area the temperature gauge on the starboard outer engine rose so the crew shut down the engine and feathered the propeller, believing it was also damaged by flak. Despite the damage the crew managed to fly back to the circuit of RAF Leconfield airfield. At 17:34 the pilot attempted to land but was forced to fly an overshoot. At around 400 feet above the ground and with the wheels down the pilot temporarily lost control due to a loss of engine power. Regaining control a forced landing was made near the airfield with the wheels down, the aircraft ran through a couple of fields before it passed over a ditch and this broke the undercarriage legs. It came to rest a short distance later with fuselage broken in two and in doing so the aircraft was badly damaged. (Aircraft Accidents In Yorkshire).SafeCorrected information submitted by 640 Squadron archivist Keven Turner - November 2017

London Gazette dated 2nd March1945. Citation for DFC: ‘Flying Officer Ronald Owen James BUCKLAND (176444), RAFVR, 640 Sqn. Pilot Officer William Gordon HOLMAN (J92116), RCAF, 640 Sqn. Pilot Officer Trevor WATKINS (186557), RAFVR, 640 Sqn. These officers were pilot, air bomber and flight engineer respectively in an aircraft detailed to attack the Essen/Mulheim airfield in December, 1944. During the bombing run a shell burst in front of the aircraft and a large piece of shrapnel crashed through the windscreen of Pilot Officer Holman's compartment, narrowly missing his head. Unperturbed, he remained in his position ready to release the bombs. Almost immediately another shell burst close by. Two engines and the tailplane were damaged and the aircraft went into a dive. Flying Officer Buckland was wounded in the side. (Pilot Officer Watkins, displaying great promptitude, immediately went to his captain's assistance and the aircraft was righted. Although suffering acutely, Flying Officer Buckland held the aircraft on a straight run, enabling Pilot Officer Holman to execute a good attack. The injured pilot was now bleeding at the mouth. Although the aircraft was flying at great height he was forced to dispense with his oxygen mask. Nevertheless, he remained at the controls until over Allied territory. Pilot Officer Holman then took over. Though not as skilled as a regular pilot he flew the aircraft to England. On reaching the nearest airfield, Flying Officer Buckland, who, in the meantime, had been given expert first aid by Pilot Officer Watkins, was assisted to the cockpit and took over the controls. Although very weak from loss of blood he brought the aircraft down safely. Few captains could have showed greater resolution. He set a magnificent example of courage and fortitude. Pilot Officers Holman and Watkins also proved themselves to be outstanding members of aircraft crew. Their conduct in most harassing circumstances was exemplary’.

1944.10.05HalifaxIIINP944BM:?RAF Skipton-on-SwaleGardening 'Rosemary area'Took off on the night of the 5th October, to carry out 'Gardening' operations in the Rosemary area. The mines were dropped in their allotted positions and the aircraft had just turned for Base when it was attacked by a Ju188. Cannon shells exploded in the Rear Turret, Empennage, and Port Wing, and the Rear Gunner was instantly killed with a cannon shell through the head. Due to damaged controls the aircraft could not corkscrew and the only evasive action possible was to dive. Up to this time it was impossible for the Mid-Upper Gunner to fire, but as the fighter closed in the Mid-Upper was able to open fire and struck the fighter’s starboard wing, engine and cockpit. He held his fire on the fighter until it closed to 100 yards range when it dropped its undercarriage flipped over on its back arid was last seen diving towards the sea. The aircraft then proceeded to England without further incident and landed at RAF Carnaby.ReturnedFg Off. Watson was awarded the DFC whilst with 433 Sqn. London Gazette 5th December 1944. Citation: This officer has completed very many sorties. He has proved himself to be a cool and skilful pilot and a very fine captain. On one occasion, early in September, 1944, he piloted an aircraft detailed to attack Emden in daylight-. When crossing the English coast on the outward flight, Flying Officer Watson was compelled to feather the propeller of the port engine when the oil cooler became defective. Despite the loss of engine power, Flying Officer Watson continued to the target and executed his attack. His determination was characteristic of that which he has invariably displayed.
