The rear gunner suspected that their a/c was being followed by a German night fighter so the pilot flew as low as possible despite the dark night. Approaching the English coastline the crew were unsure of their location so attempted to gain height but as power was applied the port engine cut out. The pilot then ordered his crew to bale out. The rear gunner left the a/c but as they were flying at a height of 100ft his parachute failed to deploy properly and he was killed. The rest of the crew stayed in the a/c, which then crashed at around 0030 hrs near RAF Langtoft, between Driffield and Malton. The bomb aimer was thrown out during the crash and died of his injuries in the early hours of the following morning.
