NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Our hosting service imposes a 4-character search minimum for database tables. We have modified our databases to support 3-character name searches.

Add 'x' to 3-character name: e.g. to search for 'coe' put 'coex' in search box, for 'fox' put 'foxx'.

If you need help, EMAIL us with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.
To search on squadron, append 'Sqn'. Examples: '72Sqn' or '416Sqn'

(Extract from report from No4 MREU no name or dated) After several days of search I found a witness, Burgomeister Gabe of Essern who was able to guide me to the woods of a Lancaster. Burgomeister Gabe says that at 01:30 on Sunday 20 February 1944, two aircraft collided in mid air. None of the fragments were collected by the Luftwaffe, but they were unable to move tell section which was still at the scene of the crash. It was definitely a part of DS825 [sic] as they ....... were damaged registration numbers reading “D.S.” on one side and 82 on the other side. It was a complete tail section so there is no doubt that it was a Lancaster. Policeman Eserwych of Law confirmed date and other details of the crash from his diary.

1944.10.05HalifaxIIINP944BM:?RAF Skipton-on-SwaleGardening 'Rosemary area'Took off on the night of the 5th October, to carry out 'Gardening' operations in the Rosemary area. The mines were dropped in their allotted positions and the aircraft had just turned for Base when it was attacked by a Ju188. Cannon shells exploded in the Rear Turret, Empennage, and Port Wing, and the Rear Gunner was instantly killed with a cannon shell through the head. Due to damaged controls the aircraft could not corkscrew and the only evasive action possible was to dive. Up to this time it was impossible for the Mid-Upper Gunner to fire, but as the fighter closed in the Mid-Upper was able to open fire and struck the fighter’s starboard wing, engine and cockpit. He held his fire on the fighter until it closed to 100 yards range when it dropped its undercarriage flipped over on its back arid was last seen diving towards the sea. The aircraft then proceeded to England without further incident and landed at RAF Carnaby.KiAHarrogate (Stonefall) Cemetery Sec. G. Row A. Grave 14. Interred on the 10th of October, 1944
