NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Our hosting service imposes a 4-character search minimum for database tables. We have modified our databases to support 3-character name searches.

Add 'x' to 3-character name: e.g. to search for 'coe' put 'coex' in search box, for 'fox' put 'foxx'.

If you need help, EMAIL us with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.
To search on squadron, append 'Sqn'. Examples: '72Sqn' or '416Sqn'

1942-09-02WellingtonIIZ8529PH:UBinbrook22:52KarlsruheZ8529 was claimed by Ofw. Bruno Eikmeier, his 1st Abschuss, from 2./NJG1 (detached to 9./NJG4) near Léglantiers some 8 km east of St. Just at 4.200 m at 05:00 hrs (Nachtjagd Combat Archive (30 May - 31 December 1942) The Early Years Part 3 - Theo Boiten). The pilot tried to shake off the night fighter and crashed into a hill. Crashed Leglantiers woods/Vienne Field-Cne de Leglantiers (North) 12km NE of ClermontPoW No. 27027, Stalag 334Flt Sgt. Alt PoW report “The a/c was returning from Karlsruhe, height 9000 ft, 10 mls from the French coast, when it was attacked by a Ju88. Effective evasion action was taken during which the height was reduced to 5000 ft. An enemy a/c was sighted on the starboard side and slightly above, so the height was dropped to 500 ft. The port propeller hit a tree and the port motor became unserviceable. The propeller was feathered and an attempt made to climb on one engine. This failed owing to an increase in the height of the ground and we crashed into the brow of a hill. Both Monckton and Logan were killed by the impact, and Holland suffered a fractured collar bone. Both Foley and self were uninjured. The a/c crashed in the vicinity of St Juste, France. I was picked up 6 days later by the Germans.”

Shortly later all baled out over Allied held territory, returning to RAF Little Straughton on the 27th DecemberSafe//Injured 28th April 1945DFC was awarded to Warrant Officer (WO) Anderson whilst with 582 Sqn. London Gazette 23rd February 1945. Citation: Distinguished Flying Cross. Warrant Officer Arnold Andreas Leslie ANDERSEN (Aus.426001), R.A.A.F., 582 Sqn. Distinguished Flying Medal. Aus. 424485 Flight Sergeant John Grylls WATSON, R.A.A.F., 582 Sqn. Warrant Officer Andersen and Flight Sergeant Watson were wireless operator and rear gunner respectively in an aircraft detailed to attack Cologne in December, 1944. When approaching the target the aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire and sustained some damage. On leaving the area, the bomber was engaged by ten fighters. In the face of persistent attacks, Flight Sergeant Watson displayed great coolness. His turret was not functioning properly and two of his guns were unserviceable. Nevertheless, he defended his aircraft with great resolution Eventually, his turret was hit by a cannon shell. The windscreen was shattered. The intercommunication system was smashed. The turret doors became firmly jammed and Flight Sergeant Watson was trapped. Undeterred, he continued to fire at the enemy as best he could. Meantime, Warrant Officer Andersen had seen his comrade's plight and went to render assistance. It was a dangerous task as the pilot was taking violent evading action and the fuselage had suffered considerable damage. Nevertheless he negotiated a safe passage to the rear turret and extricated his comrade after forcing the turret doors with an axe. Soon afterwards it became necessary to leave the crippled aircraft by parachute. Had Warrant Officer Andersen not been successful the rear gunner would have had no hope of escape. In most distressing circumstances these crew members displayed cool courage and great determination".
