NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Born on the 27th April 1917 at Wanganui. Worked as a grocer for Kernahans of Wanganui prior to service. Enlisted at Levin on the 21st December 1940 as air gunner under training. Embarked for Canada on the 30th January 1941. Wireless operator air gunner and promoted to sergeant on the 04th August 1941. Embarked for England on the 15th August 1941. Remustered as air gunner on the 05th January 1942. Further training with No. 11 Operational Training Unit starting on the20th July 1942. Joined 149 squadron on the 20th July 1942.

Son of Percy Frederick Lumsden (died 29th March 1943, age 69) and of Helen Eliza Lumsden (nee Miles - died 14th September 1962, age 82), of Wanganui, Wellington, New Zealand and husband of Alice Agnes Lumsden (née Campbell, later Stone), of Wanganui. A total of 208 flying hours logged and on his 11th operational sortie.

Enlisted at Rongatai on the 10th December 1941.Trained in Canada and awarded his pilot badge and commissioned on the 22nd January 1943. Attached to 55 Operational Unit on the 18th May 1943 for training on the Hurricane. Also served in 156 and 195 squadron. Joined 257 squadron on the 17th February 1944. Son of John Lunn and of Joan Hammond Lunn (née Davis), of Alexandra, Otago, New Zealand. 527 flying hours logged and on his 122nd operational sortie.

Served with 17th and 16th Squadrons. Member of the 'Goldfish Club. On Friday, 23 October 2009, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family in Hamilton. Aged 87 years. Dearly beloved husband for 59 1/2 years and best friend of Jean. Much loved father and father-in-law of Chris and Rosanna, Virginia and Kim, Simon and Helen, Rosemary and Gavin and much loved Grandad of 10 grandchildren.

Enlisted at Levin as Wireless Operator/Air Gunner uunder training on the 27th December 1941, Embarked for Canada on the 02nd March 1942, Air Gunners Badge and promoted to sergeant on the 04th December 1942, Embarked for England on the 29th December 1942. 75 squadron on the 15th June 1943, Awarded commission on the 08th November 1943. Joined 7 squadron on the 24th March 1944.

Born on the 20th November 1918 at Waikuku. Worked as a shepherd prior to service with J.A.P. Cameron of Ben Ohau, South Island. Accepted for RAF short service commission on the 23rd May 1938. RNZAF and Canty Aero Club as pilot under training on the 20th June 1938. Commission awarded on the 13th September 1938. 'A' licence obtained on the 10th October 1938. Pilots badge awarded on the 17th December 1938.

Embarked for England the 17th April 1939. Joined 48 squadron on the 03rd June 1939 flying the Anson and Hudson. Attached to 206 and then 502 squadron (no dates available). Joined No. 6 Coastal Operational Training Unit on the 21st January 1942 as an instructor. Then No. 21 (C) Operational Training Unit 07th September 1942. Finally joining 236 Squadron on the 14th September 1942.

Son of Ronald and Catherine Mabel Annie Macdonald (nee Scott), of Waikuku, North Canterbury, New Zealand. A total of 1790 flying hours logged and over 300 operations flown.

Born on the 26th December 1915 in Hong Kong. Moved to New Zealand when he was 15. Worked as a shipping clerk for L D Nathan in Auckland. Enlisted on the 04th June 1940 at Levin. ned with No. 2 Elementary Flying Training School on the 01st July 1940. Then attached to No 2 Flying Training School on the 25th August 1940. Pilots badge was awarded on the 28th October 1940 and a commission on the 21st December 1940. Joined 2 squadron on the 02nd January 1941.

Son of William and Janet Ronal Christal MacFarlane (née Cameron) of Hong Kong later of Manly, New South Wales, Australia. A total of 462 flying hours were logged, with 92 on the Hudson.

Died 20th August 1990, age 74. Husband of Constance Decimond Mack (died 21st June 1972) of Auckland, New Zealand. Born 20 January 1916 in Wellington. He joined the RAF in 1937. On the 24th August 1938 Arthur Mack was graded as P/O. Piloting a Whitley N1385 involved in a heavy landing accident at RAF Driffield on the 10th January 1940 - aircraft repaired.

He was promoted to F/O. on the 24th March 1940, then to Fl/Lt. on the24th March 1941 and to S/Ldr (temp) on 1st July 1943. After flying with Bomber Command he transferred to Fighter Command and trained as a night-fighter pilot. He later commanded 605 Squadron and was awarded the DFC for service with this unit, Gazetted on 24th September 1943, the citation reads..

'This officer formerly completed a tour of operational duty in Bomber Command. Latterly in fighter operations at night. Squadron Leader Mack has displayed great keenness and tenacity. During a recent operational flight, and when some 430 miles from base, his aircraft struck an object and four feet of the starboard wing of his aircraft was broken off and all except two feet of the starboard aileron. Despite this, Squadron Leader Mack flew the aircraft to base. This officer has set a very fine example.'

He transferred to the RNZAF in January 1944, survived the war and returned home.

1942-05-22WellingtonIIIZ1566AA-KFeltwellTraining The a/c was on a night cross country flight when according the accident card they had flown into un-forecast bad weather and while trying to descend through the cloud to determine their position the a/c struck the ground near Grindon and broke up over a wide area with the front end of the a/c being the most broken up section. Of the parts found at the crash site that were identifiable most were from the cockpit area, they were spread across almost the entire field indicating the front end of the aircraft was completely destroyed as the a/c slid across the field. The New Zealand personnel who were killed in the crash were all buried on the 28th May 1942 at Buxton Cemetery, the service was conducted by 28 Maintenance Unit, whose medical staff had also attended the crash site.

Born on the 19th December 1920 at V. Worked as an accountant for Carr, Stretton and Company prior to service. Enlisted at Levin on the 28th September 1941 as a pilot under training but that terminated and remastered as an observer on the 28th December 1941.12th February 1942 embarked for training in Canada. Awarded his observers badge and a commission on the 21st September 1942.Embarked for England on the 09th March 1943. Joined 487 squadron on the 25th May 1943 flying the Ventura and Mosquito. Son of John Mackay and of Mary Mackay (née Falla), of Morrinsville, Auckland, New Zealand. A total of 496 flying hours logged and on his 03rd operational sortie.

Enlisted in the RAAF on the 31st January 1942. Embarked for England on the 15th January 1943. Trained at 82 Operational Training Unit joining on the 22nd June 1943. Promoted to sergeant on the 12th November 1942, Fl/Sgt. on the 23rd September 1943. Joined 75 squadron on the 27th October 1943.

Son of Walter James Mackenzie (died 06th July 1945) and Vera Mackenzie (died 27th June 1938) and husband of Mary Elizabeth Mackenzie, of 3 Cambridge Street, Hackney, South Australia. Grave inscription: 'He Died That We Might Live'.
