Whilst over the target the aircraft was hit by cannon fire from a fighter. At the same time a high explosive shell burst just below the bomber and the flying shrapnel wounded 4 members of the crew, 2 of them mortally. The aircraft had sustained severe damage. One engine was set on fire and became useless. The elevators and controls and the flaps were affected, whilst the undercarriage was also damaged. Considerable height was lost but Pilot Officer Brooks regained control at 14,000 feet and course was set for home. The aircraft gradually lost height during the homeward flight and it became necessary to jettison all heavy movable equipment. The English coast was finally crossed at an extremely low level and Pilot Officer Brooks effected a masterly landing. This officer displayed a high degree of skill, courage and determination. Flight Lieutenant Fabian and Flight Sergeant Pincott also proved themselves to be cool and valiant members of aircraft crew. In the face of trying circumstances they executed their tasks with skill and coolness and rendered great assistance to their captain and pilot in his endeavours to reach home. Their exemplary conduct and devotion to duty was worthy of high praise. | |||||||||

K. 7. | ![]() ![]() ![]() | DFM London Gazette 21 November 1941: ‘Sergeant Farmery was screened after 28 operational missions, in all of which he displayed ability and resource of the highest order. He was regarded as one of the most skilful captains in the Squadron, who could always be relied upon to attack the target. He was at all times a cheerful and inspiring leader, with an unusual mastery of aircraft, engines and air tactics, and I strongly recommend that his unswerving devotion to duty be recognised with the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal.’ Commenced his operational career 10Sqn, a Whitley unit at Dishforth, in December 1940. Moved to Leeming in the summer of 1941. Tour of operations included three trips to Bremen, six to Cologne, 2 trips to both Essen and Mannheim, in addition to a number of targets in France and Holland, the former including a strike on the Scharnhorst at La Pallice on 23 July 1941. He flew as a 2nd Pilot for his first eight sorties, but thereafter as Captain of Aircraft and, as is clear from relevant ORB. entries, intense flak was encountered on numerous occasions, a case in point being a trip to Cologne on the night of 27-28 May 1941: ‘Heavy and intense A.A. fire was met, particularly from the south-east of the target, this was accurate and searchlights were operating in large numbers. Two small holes were caused in the port aileron as a result of A.A. fire but none of the crew were wounded.’ Earlier in his tour, on a trip to Sterkrade on the night of 15-16 February, ‘intense searchlight activity was met over the Ruhr and the aircraft was held and the crew completely dazzled ... bombs were jettisoned when the aircraft was held in searchlights and it was suspected that a fighter attack was being carried out.’ Clearly a highly skilled pilot, Farmery had risen to the rank of Squadron Leader by the time of his posting to No. 77 Squadron, a Halifax unit operating out of Elvington, at the end of 1943. Sadly, however, it proved to be a short-lived posting, for on the night of 21-22 January 1944, during a sortie to Magdeburg, his aircraft was attacked and shot down by a night fighter; only one member of crew survived to be taken PoW, Flight Sergeant R. Citation reads: "N.Z. 402136 Sergeant James Phillip Farrow, Royal New Zealand Air Force, No. 408 (R.C.A.F.) Squadron One night in January, 1942, this airman was the pilot of an aircraft which bombed Emden. The aircraft was subsequently attacked and badly damaged by the fire from 2 enemy fighters. Sergeant Farrow received a slight wound in the leg and the remaining members of the crew were seriously wounded. In the face of a harassing situation, Sergeant Farrow ordered the crew to abandon aircraft. Unaware that his message had not been received as the intercommunication system had broken down and believing himself to be alone in the aircraft, he finally evaded his attackers and set an approximate course for England. Flying a badly damaged aircraft, on a dark moonless night, and with no instruments to aid him, Sergeant Farrow eventually reached this country where he made a safe landing with the under-carriage retracted. By his skill and resolution, he saved both his aircraft and, unknowingly, his wounded crew. This airman has participated in many operational missions and has always shown courage and tenacity worthy of high praise. DFC awarded whilst with 692 Sqn, gazetted 13th June 1944. The KING has also been graciously pleased to approve the undermentioned awards in recognition of gallantry displayed in the following circumstances: “One night in May, 1944, several crews of Mosquito aircraft were detailed for a difficult and dangerous mine-laying mission. The operation called for the highest standard of skill and accuracy. In the face of intense anti-aircraft fire, balloon defences and considerable searchlight activity the attack was pressed home with great precision from low level. That complete success was achieved in spite of such hazards is a high tribute to the calm courage and iron determination shown by the following officers who participated in various capacities as leaders and members of aircraft crew. 2816 SUPPLEMENT TO THE LONDON GAZETTE, 13 JUNE, 1944 Distinguished Service Order.
