NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

A RNZAF reserve pilot with Wellington Aero Club and awarded his 'A' licence on the 09th February 1939. Enlisted in the RNZAF at Levin on the 18th December 1939. Pilots badge awarded on the 10th June 1940 and promised to sergeant on the 27th July 1940 following training at No. 4 Elementery Flying School. Embarked for England on the 11th August 1940. Joined 115 squadron on the 31st March 1941 following training with 15 Operational Training Unit and a period with 57 squadron. Involved in a landing accident whilst with 57 squadron on the 28th January 1941, no injuries sustained. Son of Eric Rupert Matthews and of Annie Dorothea Matthews (nee Park), of Karon, Wellington, New Zealand. A total of 455 flying hours logged and on his 25th operational sortie.

Son of Albert Edward (died 19th September 1958 age 80) and Clara Stanfiel Max (nee Haycock) (died 04th October 1958 age 78). Brother of Donald, Laurence, Keith and Lorna. Husband of Joan, father of Tony, Michael and Anne. Grandfather of 10 children. Remembered at the family plot in Saint Pauls Churchyard. Tasman, New Zealand. DFC Citation: L/G. 14th July 1944 whilst with 75 squadron: 'This officer has displayed exceptional skill, great drive and outstanding devotion to duty, qualities which have contributed in a large measure to the high standard of operational efficiency of the squadron he commands. He has completed a very large number of sorties and his fine leadership, high courage and unbeatable determination have greatly inspired his crews. His example has been of a high order'.

Wireless Operator/Air Gunner badge awarded and promoted to sergeant on the 28th June 1943. Joined 31 Squadron (Avenger - 1 operational sortie) on the 17th January 1944. Ditched after e/f (uninjured) on the 14/15th March 1944 at Gisborne. A total of 307 flying hours logged.

Enlisted on the 09th July as an aircraft hand but re-mustered as a wireless operator/air gunner on the 28th November 1942. Embarked for further training in Canada on the 12th February 1943. Awarded his wireless operator/air gunner badge and promoted to sergeant on the 15th November 1943. Embarked for England on the 14th December 1943. Further training with No. 11 Operational Training Unit flying on Wellingtons then to No. 1657 Heavy Conversion Unit on the 03rd August 1944 on Stirlings. Joined 214 squadron on the 20th September 1944. Son of Charles Edwin Armstrong and of Agnes Swinbourne Armstrong (nee Handford), of Geraldine, South Canterbury, New Zealand. Engaged to a Audrey Trotman at the time of his death. A total of 246 flying hours logged. On his 3rd operational sortie.
