NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Our hosting service imposes a 4-character search minimum for database tables. We have modified our databases to support 3-character name searches.

Add 'x' to 3-character name: e.g. to search for 'coe' put 'coex' in search box, for 'fox' put 'foxx'.

If you need help, EMAIL us with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.
To search on squadron, append 'Sqn'. Examples: '72Sqn' or '416Sqn'

RAAF Honour Roll1943-08-02 Hit by Japanese flak and had to crash-land his Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk on a beach near Lindenhofen. When Bostons of 22 Squadron RAAF discovered and bombed the remains of the aircraft during the afternoon, there was no trace of the pilot. It will be known later that he was captured. He was murdered by the Japanese on August 16, 1943. Awarded DFC posthumously 17 June 1947. DFC Citation: 'Squadron Leader Sproule started operational flying at the commencement of Japanese operations in Malaya. He consistently displayed exceptional skill and courage against greatly superior forces and was credited with shooting down one enemy fighter. Returning to Australia, he continued operational flying and was appointed flight commander of No 77 Squadron. Throughout his long period of active operations against the enemy, Squadron Leader Sproule’s sustained gallantry and devotion to duty has been a most valuable asset to his squadron. '(London Gazette 17 June 1947, Page 2715)

Kittyhawk pilots of No. 77 Squadron attacked five Japanese barges on 2nd August during a sweep along the south coast of New Britain between Gasmata and Jacquinot Bay, destroyed three and damaged two. Eighteen Kittyhawks took part in this sweep, led by Flight Lieutenant Sproule, who had been appointed to command the squadron the day before. When making a daring low-level attack near the Lindenhafen plantation, Sproule’s Kittyhawk was hit by anti-aircraft fire and crash-landed on the beach. Sproule was missing when Bostons of No. 22 Squadron returned to the area in the afternoon and destroyed the crashed aircraft.

1943-12-29LancasterIIIJB607AR:NBinbrook17:03BerlinOn return leg the a/c was attacked by a night fighter north of Aachen. Sgt Seery saw tracer passing and the Lancaster was hit in the nose. The Plt.Off. Ireland immediately dived to port and during the dive the a/c was hit again by many shells. Four of the crew were believed to have been killed in the second attack. The a/c caught fire and all four engines were disabled. Plt.Off. Ireland managed to level the a/c and remained at the controls to give the surviving crew the time to bale out. Sgt Seery, and Sgt Squire, tried to open the escape hatch but it jammed and took some time to open. When they opened it Sgt Seery baled out but Sgt Squire went back to help Plt.Off. Ireland. A few seconds after Sgt Seery got out the a/c exploded and crashed into the grounds of a monastery at Bleijerheide, near Kerkrade in The Netherlands.

Post war records indicate that that JB607 was shot down by a Messerschmitt Bf110g from 2./NJG1 flown by Oberfeldwebel Heinrich Oloff who survived the war having 14 night victories recorded. He died at Christmas 1999. However, this aircraft was also claimed by Flak of 3./schw. Flak Abt 465 and 4./schw. Flak Abt. 381. The claim by Lt. Oloff not listed in OKL/RLM 2./NJG confirmed Abschussübersicht. Probably rejected and victory credited to Flak. (After claiming this a/c Oblt Eckardt engaged a Halifax and was shot down in the ensuring battle northeast of Melsbroek. Bordfunker Fw Frank safely baled out but Eckardt’s parachute entangled itself on the tail unit of his Bf 110 E-2 (W.Nr. 4494) “D5+AR” and he crashed to his death near Kampenhout in Belgium). (Nachtjagd War Diaries Volume 1 (details from John Jones)KilledBraine-le-Comte Communal Cemetery Plot II Row C Grave 3.The Lancaster burned, and the a/c dropped its bomb load. Thirty fire bombs landed at the villages of Graty and Silly, fortunately no significant damage was done. The a/c flew a long way to finally explode above Braine-le-Comte. One of the four engines broke through the roof of a school that served as a shelter for German troops. Six soldiers of the Radfahr-Abteilung 23 (belonging to the 23 Infantry Division) were killed instantly, a German was badly wounded and a seventh soldier was slightly wounded. Three houses were set on fire.
