Those who survived the ditching were rescued after eight hours, by a British Warship. The body of Group Captain S J Skarzynski, who was Station Commander at Lindholme, and a famous pre-war pioneer of sporting flights, was carried back across the sea and washed up on Terschelling, where he was buried. After the a/c had made an emergency landing on the water, the crew launched a dinghy. Then when it was the turn of Gp. Capt. Skarzynski, he was probably the last person to leave the a/c, he fatally jumped beside the dinghy. The current took him to the tail of the a/c. The other crew heard him calling for help for a while, after which he eventually drowned. | Killed on Operational Flight | PAF Memorial, Northolt, Terschelling (West-Terschelling) General Cemetery - Friesland, Netherlands.
