NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Born on the 02nd December 1916 at Auckland. Worked as a clerk for the Transport Department of Dunedin prior to enlisting. Served for 5 months in the territorial army. Enlisted at Levin in the RNZAF on the 19th November 1939 as a pilot under training. Trained with No. 1 Flying Training School. Pilots badge awarded the 06th April 1940 and and to sergeant on the 28th May 1940. Embarked for England on the 07th June 1940. Further training with 12 Operational Training Unit before joining 88 squadron flying the Battle on the 26th September 1940. Embarked for Iceland joining 98 squadron which merged into 1423 flight on the 15th July 1941, then back to Feltwell on the 26th July 1941. Joined 1401 Meteorological flight on the 13th December 1941.

Born on the 19th February 1920 in Dunedin. Educated at Otago Boys High School. A salesman in electrical showroom for Dunedin City Corporation. Enlisted on the 13th December 1940 at Harewood as an equipment assistant. With No. 1 Elementary Flying Training School 28th February 1941 and remastered as a pilot under training 27th July 1942. No. 3 Elementary Flying Training School on the 04th September 1942, with his 1st solo on the 21st September 1942.

Embarked for Canada on the RMS Mauritania 24th December 1942 arriving 07th January 1943. No. 7 Service Flying Training School, class 73 25th January 1943. Flying badge awarded and promoted to sergeant on the 14th May 1943. No. 31 Ground Reconnaissance School, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Quebec on the 29th May 1943. Joined 32 Operational Training Unit in Patricia Bay, Vancouver Island, British Columbia on the 21st August 1943. A total of 255 flying hours accumulated with 7 of these solo on the Hampden.

Son of Herbert David Smalley McLeod (died 08th July 1949, age 55) and Christina McLeod (née Leith - died 28 Feb 1971, age 71), of Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. His younger brother, John Mark Sanders McLeod served in the 18 Armoured Regiment, 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force. (Born on the 18th June 1922, passed away on the 10th August 2016, age 94). Herbert's epitaph: 'I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes Unto The Hills From Whence Cometh My Help . Psalm 121'.

New Plymouth on the 19th March 1943. In station sick quarters 14-26 April. Initial Trying Wing on the 28th April 1943, re-mustered the following day as a pilot under training on the 24th June 1943. No0. 2 Elementary Flying Training School 26th June 1943. No. 2 Service Flying Training School 27th August 1943. Pilot badge awarded on the 01st November 1943. 83 solo flying hours with 58 on the Harvard.

Claimed by Oblt Georg-Hermann Greiner Killed Age 29Runnymede Panel 158.Stirling EF436, piloted by Flight Sergeant R. Thomas, was lost without trace whilst on a mine-laying sortie off the Fresian islands, on 5-6 July 1943. All the crew were killed. Reliable reports from the Dutch said that the aircraft had been shot down by a night fighter over the sea, 12 miles North West of Terscherlling (the middle island of the Southern Frisian Group) at approximately 02:31 hours. The night fighter was captained by Oblt. Georg-Hermann Grenier, of IV/NJG1, this was his sixth kill out of a total of 51. The kill is confirmed in Grenier’s war records.

Pilot badge awarded on the 27th July 1942 and promoted to sergeant on the 17th October 1942. Joined 17 squadron on the 02nd November 1942. 217 solo flying hours logged with 17 on the P-40.

Moved to New Zealand around 1924. Educated at Dilworth School and then to Dilworth University College. Worked as a clerk for the Customs Department in Auckland prior to service. Enlisted at Levin on the 28th September 1941 as a pilot under training. Joined No. 4 Elementary Flying Training School on the 09th November 1941. Pilot training terminated on the 16th December 1941 at Rongotal. Remustered as Air Observer on the 28th December 1941.

Embarked for Canada on the 12th February 1942 on the SS Boschfontein. Attached to the RCAF on the 04th March 1942. Joined No. 7 Air Observers School on the 15th March 1942 at Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. Then to to No. 3 Bomber Gunnery School on the 21st June 1942 at Macdonald, Manitoba. No. 1 Central Navigation School on the 16th August 1942 at Rivers, Manitoba. Air Observers badge awarded on the 21st September 1942 and received his commission. Further training with No. 34 Operational Training Unit flying the Ventura aircraft 23rd September 1942 at Penfield Ridge New Brunswick. Attached to RAF sent by train to New York and embarked for England on the 09th March 1943. Arrived at No. 11 Personnel Dispatch and Reception Centre on the 18th March 1943. Joined 487 (NZ) squadron on the 25th May 1943 flying the Ventura initially then on the Mosquito at Methwold in Norfolk.

Enlisted at Gisborne on the 11th July 1942 as an aircraft hand but remastered as a pilot under training on the 04th February 1943. Trained at No. 3 Elementary Flying Training School03rd April 1943 then to No. 2 Service Flying Training School on the 31st May 1943.

Pilots badge awarded on the 02nd August 1943 and promoted to sergeant on the 25th September 1943. Embarked for England on the 15th October 1943. Joined No. 5 Pilots Advanced Flying Unit on the 20th June 1944. Finally joining 595 squadron on the 15th August 1944.

Son of Albert Arvie McMillan (died 26th August 1948, age 58) and Olive Maud McMillan (née Prosser - born 15th February 1896 - died 31st December 1977, age 81), brother of Trevor Thomas (died 20th July 2013, age 90) and Mervyn Albert (died 10th March 2005, age 81) of Southbridge, Canterbury, New Zealand. A total of 289 flying hours logged with 10 on the Martinet.

Injured on a practice landing accident on the 24th February 1941 and hospitalised/sick leave until the 23rd May 1941. Awarded his pilots badge and promoted to sergeant on the the 05th April 1941. Embarked for Singapore on the 22nd July 1941. Embarked with 67 squadron to Burma between 09th and 13th October 1941. Only son of Charles Percy McNabb (died 28th September 1978 age 78) and Maude Alexandra Ena McNabb (died 27th June 1982 age 80 - nee Sloss) and brother of June Maud.

Pilots badge awarded on the 29th September 1941 and promoted to sergeant on the 08th November 1941.

Embarked for England on the 17th November 1941.After further training with various units embarked for Gold Coast on 30th May 1942. Attached to Aircraft Delivery Unit on the up till July 1942 ferrying single and multi-engine aircraft commissioned on the 08th July 1943. Joined 178 squadron on the 24th December 1943.

Embarked for Canada on the 22nd July 1941 ON THE 'Dominion Monarch'. Further training with No. 6 Service Flying Training School starting on the 18th August 1941. Pilots badge awarded on the 07th November 1941 and promoted to sergeant. Embarked for England on the 14th November 1941. Joined 52 Operational Training Unit on the 10th March 1942 for training on the Spitfire. Joined 122 squadron on the 12th May 1942.

Son of Archibald John (died 05th October 1968, age 87) and Isabella Montgomery McPherson (nee Hogg - died 23rd May 1945, age 64), of Roxburgh, Otago, New Zealand. A total of 299 flying hours logged and on his 24th operational sortie.

Served with the territorial army for 3 years before joining the RNZAF at Levin on the 30th November 1940. Embarked for Canada on te 27th March 1941 for pilot training. Awarded his pilots badge on the 03rd July 1941 and promoted to sergeant. Awarded his commission on the 04th July 1941.Prior to joining 3 squadron on the 19th November 1941 carried out conversion training on the Hurricane with 55 Operational Training Unit. Son of Harry Douglas McVay and Gladys McVay (nee Boyd) and husband of Jessie JJean McVay (nee Burns), of 612 High Street, Lower Hutt, Wellington, New Zealand. A total of 245 flying hours logged and had carried out 3 operational sorties.
