Grave 1 | Read Archive Report September 1943 (around 6 pm) Le Bois Nicole, Commune of La Ferté-Fresnel (Orne, Normandy) During a dogfight over La Ferté-Fresnel, a Mk IX Spitfire, EN-529 (485 Squadron, RNZAF), was hit and crashed in flames in a field of grazing cows. The pilot, Flying Officer Murray Metcalfe, aged 20, from Hastings, died of burns. A cow in the plane’s way was transpierced by one of the machine guns, its body found with the burnt-out plane. FO Metcalfe shot down a Focke-Wulf 190 about 25 miles south-west of Beaumont-le-Roger at 5.45 pm, probably moments before he too was shot down. Transfer to the RNZAF on the 01st January 1944. Son of George Greyling Miller and Edith Lillian Miller (née Stokes), of Somerford Street, Christchurch, Canterbury and husband of Edith May Miller (née Chamberlain), of Christchurch. At the time of her husbands death was living in Harrogate, Yorkshire, England. Edith died on the 09th June 1997. They had 1 child, a boy.
