NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Our hosting service imposes a 4-character search minimum for database tables. We have modified our databases to support 3-character name searches.

Add 'x' to 3-character name: e.g. to search for 'coe' put 'coex' in search box, for 'fox' put 'foxx'.

If you need help, EMAIL us with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.
To search on squadron, append 'Sqn'. Examples: '72Sqn' or '416Sqn'

Squadron was directed to attack the German Battleship Tirpitz. Dubbed ‘The Beast’ by Churchill, this ship presented an ever present convoy danger from her lair in Trondheim. The raid was not a success and not one aircraft hit this very difficult target. Marshall was killed in action when Lancaster L7572, piloted by Flight Lieutenant J. G. Mackid, was shot down by flak and crashed near Trondheim- the Squadron Leader leading the raid witnessed their aircraft going down in flames and hitting a hillside. All the crew were killed.

On MSFU (Merchant Ship Fighter Unit) duty with Charles Fenwick (on right).

In June 1942 Turley-George was senior pilot on the Camship 'Empire Tide' in Russian convoy PQ 17. The convoy was ordered to scatter when it was thought an attack by German warships was imminent. After the scatter order came, the ships were subjected to six days of bombing and torpedo attacks, until only eleven remained of the original forty-two. 'Empire Tide' was one of the survivors. It lay in a bay for two weeks, joined a small Russian convoy and finally reached Archangel on 24th July 1942. Later in the year Turley-George went to the newly-reformed 198Sqn at Digby as a supernumerary Flight Lieutenant. In early 1943 he was attached to 231Sqn as an instructor. It was originally an army co-operation unit which had converted to a fighter-reconnaissance role. In March 1943 he went on to the squadron strength as 'A' Flight Commander. Turley-George was wounded in November during a ground-attack sortie over Normandy. He was awarded the DFC 3rd October 1944. In December 1944 he was posted to 88 Group Communications Squadron at Turnhouse as a Flight Commander. The unit later moved to Fornebu, Norway. In December 1945 Turley-George took command of the Reserve Command Communications Squadron. He was released from the RAFO in November 1949 as a Squadron Leader and became a test pilot with an aircraft company. Awarded the Norwegian Medal of Liberation. He died in 1991

Born on the Isle of Harris. Educated at Eton. P/O Walker was part of a 3 PRU Spitfire detachment based at Vaenga. Their task were to monitor Tirpitz and other German vessels as part of Operation Orator. The rondels on the Spitfires were replaced with the Russian Red Star. The other two pilots were F/O Furniss and F/L Fairhurst. The Spitfires flew twelve sorties over Northern Norway. When their duties were finished, the three Spitfires were handed over to the Russians. In June 1946 the grave was discovered by the RAF Missing Research and Enquiry Service (MRES). The F-24 camera was also found among the wreckage. They exhumed the remains and sent them to Tromsø Cemetery. In 1997 it was confirmed that they were the remains of P/O Walker. Photographing German shipping in the vicinity of Porsangerfjord he was shot down by Gefr. Kurt Dobner of 11/JG5. He was buried by the Germans as an ‘unknown airman’ and he would lay there until recovered by the RAF Missing Research and Enquiry Service in June 1946. Re-interred in Tromsø cemetery. In1997 that his identity was confirmed and a proper headstone dedicated.

SON OF COLONEL J. DOUGLAS WALKER AND F. WALKER, OF BORVE, ISLE OF HARRIS. C.A. HIS BROTHER, IAN H.G. ALSO DIED ON SERVICE.

Buttress DFC. Gazetted 26th March 1943. Flying Officer Gordon Sampson Clear (116769), Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, No. 139 Squadron (since deceased). Citation: March, 1943, these officers were members of aircraft crews detailed to attack the Molybdenum Plant at Knaben, Norway. Such a task, necessitating a flight over mountainous terrain covered by a blanket of snow which obscured all prominent features, demanded the highest degree of leadership and skill. At various points the formation had to fly through deep ravines and contend with most treacherous air currents. Despite this the correct target, hidden away in the mountains, was located and subjected to a telling attack from a low level. The success achieved reflects the greatest credit on the efforts of these officers whose high courage and faultless work were worthy of the highest praise.

Son of Edwin Arnold and Margaret Ethel Clear; husband of Joyce Ella Clear, of St. Albans.
