NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Our hosting service imposes a 4-character search minimum for database tables. We have modified our databases to support 3-character name searches.

Add 'x' to 3-character name: e.g. to search for 'coe' put 'coex' in search box, for 'fox' put 'foxx'.

If you need help, EMAIL us with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.
To search on squadron, append 'Sqn'. Examples: '72Sqn' or '416Sqn'

Ace. Top Gun New Zealand 275
Born in Christchurch, Gray was accepted into the RAF in 1939 after two previous attempts failed on medical grounds. He flew with No. 54 Squadron during the Battles of France and Britain, and had shot down 14 aircraft and had a half share in another by September 1940. He later added another 13 kills while leading fighter squadrons and wings in the North African and Italian Campaigns, and finished the war with a confirmed 27½ kills. After the war he held a number of staff and command positions in the RAF before his eventual retirement in 1961. He returned to New Zealand to work for Unilever. He died in 1995 at the age of 80.

1940-04-02WhitleyVN1368KN:KRAF DriffieldNight Flying Practice and Low level bombing practiceTrainingThe aircraft was “borrowed” by a 102 Sqn crew

Overshot on landing at Driffield airfield at 22:40 following a low level bombing practice, it ran through the boundary fence after the pilot attempted to apply the brakes on wet grass but would not stop the aircraft in distance available. The aircraft skidded through boundary fence, across a road and into a field. The crew escaped injury. The aircraft was later recovered by a team from 60 MU on 3rd April but was deemed beyond repair and written off. (Aircraft Accidents in Yorkshire)
SurvivedPlt Off. Gray awarded the DFC whilst with 102 Sqn. London Gazette 2nd January 1940. Citation reads: Pilot Officer Kenneth Neil GRAY (40342). Pilot Officer Gray and Pilot Officer Long were respectively Pilot and Navigator on a night reconnaissance flight over enemy territory during November, 1939. During the operations a snowstorm was encountered and the aircraft became badly iced-up, in addition to being subjected to anti-aircraft fire. Nevertheless the reconnaissance flight was continued but it was not found possible to reach the objective as eventually weather conditions rendered the aircraft practically impossible to control, the upper surface of one wing and half that of the other wing having been stripped of fabric and one flap jammed down. The wireless apparatus also failed. The journey home involved a flight of 342 miles over the sea during very heavy rainstorms and it was mainly due to the skill, courage and splendid team work of Pilot Officer GRAY and Pilot Officer LONG that the aircraft and crew were brought safely back.

Awarded the Československý válečný kříž (Czechoslovakiaoslovakia War Cross) 9 March 1940

Born on the 30th November 1915 at Marton. Worked as a hairdresser prior to service. Enlisted at Levin on the 30th November 1941. Trained at No. 2 Elementary Flying School and No. 2 Service Flying School. Awarded his pilot badge on the 27th July 1942 and promoted to sergeant on the 17th October 1942. Embarked for England on the 20th November 1942. Received his commission on the 07th February 1944. Joined 49 squadron on the 21st March 1944 from No. 5 Lancaster Finishing School. Son of William Franceys Green, JP., and Mignonette Green (nee Shepherd), of Pokeno, Auckland, New Zealand. Other sources list him as Fl/Lt but it is understood that this is a mistake. A total of 717 flying hours logged and lost on his 28th operational sortie.

DFC Citation L.G. 08th April 1944:

'One night in June, 1944, this officer piloted an aircraft detailed to attack a target in the Ruhr. When nearing the target the aircraft was engaged by a fighter but it was driven off. Soon afterwards another fighter closed into the attack and before the engagement terminated P/O. Green's aircraft sustained damage. One engine was put out of Action but this did not deter P/O. Green from pressing home his attack. He Afterwards flew safely to base. This officer has completed very many sorties and has invariably displayed a high standard of skill, determination and devotion to duty'.
