Data derived from many sources. Corrections/Additions welcomed via Helpdesk

NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Our hosting service imposes a 4-character search minimum for database tables. We have modified our databases to support 3-character name searches.

Add 'x' to 3-character name: e.g. to search for 'coe' put 'coex' in search box, for 'fox' put 'foxx'.

If you need help, EMAIL us with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.
To search on squadron, append 'Sqn'. Examples: '72Sqn' or '416Sqn'

Aircraft is presumed to have been lost in Adriatic Sea. After the War the remnants of an Unidentified Halifax ll were found in Branica, near Tarnow, which, according to local residents, crashed there at the end of August / beginning of September 1944, killing its crew. Jerzy B Cynk, in 'The PAF at War' states that this Halifax wreck is almost certainly JP295 as it is the only Polish Halifax unaccounted for. He also says that 'confusing contemporary reports from the Polish Underground linked the Branica wreckage with Liberator EW275, brought down in nearby Olszyny, ten nights earlier. Escapee from Stalag Luft 3
Plt Off Williams evaded capture for three days, but was eventually caught and sent to Oflag XXIB at Schubin in Poland. There he quickly formed a friendship with Lt Michael Codner MC who spoke French, and together they planned and executed an escape through a tunnel. However, they were quickly recaptured and, as punishment, sent to Stalag Luft III. This where the idea of the “Wooden Horse by Williams and Codner became a reality. The were joined by Fg Off Oliver Philpot MC DFC and managed to escape Stalag Luft III on 23 Oct 1943 and with the help of the Danish Resistance were repatriated via Sweden to the UK on 29 Dec 1943. When he returned Plt Off Williams was awarded the MC. He wrote the book ”The Wooden Horse” about his experiences in 1949. Peter Butterworth (Actor Carry On Films) was an inmate at Stalag Luft 3 and was one of the prisoners who vaulted “The Wooden Horse”
