Outbound the starboard engine failed and while trying to land at Colerne the Wellington overshot the runway and crashed 2120 into a field 1 mile S of the airfield. A fire broke out in the starboard engine, which was feathered. Shortly afterwards the port engine became problematic and a decision was made to make a controlled ditching. Crashed onto a slag bank on the shorline at Workington in an effort to get as close to shore as possible, to save lives. All survived except the navigator, Juliusz Jan Stefan Żywicki Age 24 who drowned. Buried Newark.
