| 3651 | Higgott | Frederick Rex | Flight Sergeant | 41329 | 1921 | New Zealander | Pilot | RNZAF | Bomber Command | 218Sqn![]() | 1942-10-24 | Stirling | I | R9241 | HA-L | Downham Market | 1850 | Milano | After thirty-five minutes in the air, the pilot noted that the port outer exactor was not working. He shed height and ordered the bomb aimer to jettison the bomb load, which fell un-armed into the sea off Harwich. Afterwards, while at 3,000 feet, the starboard-outer engine burst into flames, and it was soon apparent that the fire was uncontrollable. The order was given to bail out, but sadly it came too late. The aircraft broke up and crashed at 1929 hrs east of Colchester, taking Flt Sgt Higgott and six of his crew to their deaths.
