NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Our hosting service imposes a 4-character search minimum for database tables. We have modified our databases to support 3-character name searches.

Add 'x' to 3-character name: e.g. to search for 'coe' put 'coex' in search box, for 'fox' put 'foxx'.

If you need help, EMAIL us with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.
To search on squadron, append 'Sqn'. Examples: '72Sqn' or '416Sqn'

1943-12-29HalifaxIIJD412DY-XPocklington1659BerlinShot down and crashed over the target area whilst on a bombing raidPoW Stalag 4BHalifax JD412 with 22 other aircraft attack Berlined as part of the main force of 712 aircraft, on 29-30 December 1943. This was the 10th raid on the city during this concentrated period, and JD412 was one of 11 Lancasters and 9 Halifaxes lost in the raid. They crashed in the target area, and although it is not recorded if they were hit by flak or an enemy fighter it seems likely that so close to the target, and with Berlin’s flak defences at full strength, it would seem more likely to be flak. Martin Middlebrook in The Berlin Raids records: ‘The Germans were definitely confused by the two Mosquito raids, the controllers falling for the first of the two bluffs and ordering the fighters to Magdeburg. The fighters were later switched to Berlin but they did not arrive until the twenty minute raid was over. Only one bomber was observed to be shot down by flak over Berlin but German records show two aircraft crashing in the Berlin area.’ Pilot Edgar Stokes was the only casualty amongst his crew- he was able to keep his stricken aircraft aloft long enough for his whole crew to escape, and only he perished in the aftermath, another gallant act that took place in the air war over Europe. Crew were taken PoW, sent to Stalag 4B on 15 January 1944. Here they remained prisoners until liberated on 23 April 1945.
