After the aircraft took off from Squires Gate, Blackpool, the weather worsened. Over Liverpool both aircraft came under 'friendly' anti-aircraft gire and the aircraft were recalled. One aircraft (Grodzicki and Karwowski) did return, but the other aircraft crew appearred not to have heard the recall. They lost their bearings and flew South-West intead of North. Getting low on fuel they made a forced landing on a beach at Barmouth, North Wales, which was under water. The Defiant turned over and both crew, who were trapped inside drowned.
