NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Our hosting service imposes a 4-character search minimum for database tables. We have modified our databases to support 3-character name searches.

Add 'x' to 3-character name: e.g. to search for 'coe' put 'coex' in search box, for 'fox' put 'foxx'.

If you need help, EMAIL us with name and database to search and we will perform the search manually for you.
To search on squadron, append 'Sqn'. Examples: '72Sqn' or '416Sqn'

Canberra, Australia
On 3 June 1943, Bavin was the Captain and Pilot of Whitley V BD414/J taking off at 10:45 hours from RAF St. Eval in Cornwall on an Atlantic Patrol. Carrying 6 x 250 lb depth charges the course was set for the Bay of Biscay in search of German U-boats. The aircraft failed to return and no communication was received from the aircraft. An Air Sea Rescue procedure was put into operation, but without any results. Commemorated Runnymede Memorial, Panel 185. United Kingdom.

The crew of six were captain AUS.415212 FS Douglas Frederick Bavin (Pupil Pilot), RAAF; 2nd pilot J.22032 Plt Off. Harold Douglas Pepper (Pupil Pilot), RCAF, navigator J.14637 Plt Off. David Taylor Dorward (Pupil Navigator), RCAF, wireless operationer/air gunner 1385126 Sgt Colin Arthur Richardson (Pupil WT/AG), RAFVR, bomb aimer 136821 Plt Off. Cecil Aspland Nicholls (Pupil B/A), RAFVR, and air gunner R.10786 Sgt Eric Haakon Neilson (pupil air gunner), RCAF.

They were victims of Unteroffizier Hermann Mannetstetter of 8. Staffel/Jagdgeschwader 2 'Richthofen'. Three Fw 190 from this unit took off at 1934 hours from Fontenay-le-Comte on a free chase against anti-submarine aircraft over the Bay of Biscay. About 100 km northwest of Ushant, they engaged a Whitley which was shot down at about 500 meters height. The aircraft exploded in mid-air and only debris was seen falling into the sea. It was the first confirmed victory for Mannetstetter

Son of John Edward and Minnie Bavin, of Mount Barker, Western Australia.
