NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.

Awarded pilots badge on the 30th November 1942 and promoted to sergeant on the 08th February 1943. Embarked for England on the 09th March 1943. Son of Arthur and Margaret White (nee Jamieson). Husband of Mona White (nee Cooper - later McGregor), of 10 Epuni Street, Brooklyn, Wellington, New Zealand. A total of 302 flying hours logged with 114 solo on the Oxford.

Born on the 24th May 1917 in Gisborne, New Zealand. Prior to enlisting he worked as a sheep shearer when he left school at 15, both in New Zealand and Australia. Enlisted in the RNZAF as soon as war was declared. Embarked on the SS Mariposa for Canada. Trained further at No. 4 Service Flying Training School in Saskatchewan and was awarded his wings on the 28th February 1942. Post war he traded in sheep and with the profits he purchased Waingakia Station south of Ruatoria in New Zealand. Leslie White (died on the 23rd July 1988 age 71). Husband of Lorna Susan Kirihautu White (née Dawson - died 28th September 2001, age 85).

MiD Citation awarded on the 08th June 1944 for distinguished service and devotion to duty while flying Spitfires with 485 (NZ) Squadron.

DFC Citation awarded on the on 29th December 1944. 'Fl/Lt. White has taken part in numerous attacks on enemy transport and ground targets and has destroyed or damaged at least 50 mechanical vehicles and three trains. Fl/Lt. White has also destroyed one enemy aircraft and damaged another. His keenness and flying ability have been an inspiration to the other pilots in the squadron'.

Now buried in the Te Pula Cemetery, Tokomaru Bay, Gisborne. BLK 19 Plot. 269

Born on the 09th June 1917 at Taihape. Worked as a farmer on his fathers sheep station prior to service. Enlisted at Levin on the 28th July 1940. Trained at No. 1 Elementary Flying Training School joining on the 26th August 1940 and then to No. 1 Flying Training School joining on the 26th October 1940. Pilots badge awarded on the 16th January 1941 and promoted to sergeant on the 08th February 1941. Embarked for England on the 27th February 1941. Joined 53 Operational Training Unit on the 28th April 1941. Joined 66 squadron on the 10th June 1941 and completed 23 operational sorties. On the 26th July 1941 joined 72 squadron.

Son of Robert Owen White (died 02nd December 1959, age 78) and Elizabeth Ann Gertrude White (nee Davies - died 07th August 1948, age 62), of Maxwell, Wellington, New Zealand. A total of 344 flying hours logged and on his 53rd operational sortie.

Born on the 18th August 1915 in Alexandra. A machine attendant for Miranda Shell Lime Products Ltd. Enlisted in age RNZAF as an aircraft hand on the 30th May 1942. Embarked for Canada on the 10th November 1942 and re-mustered as an air observer.

Air navigator badge awarded and promoted to sergeant on the 16th April 1943. Embarked for England on the 23rd June 1943. With 1665 Heavy Conversion Unit on the 30th December 1943 after training with 11 Operational Training Unit. Joined 199 squadron on the 18th March 1944. Commissioned on the 24th April 1944. A total of 333 flying hours logged and on his 05th operational sortie.

The son of Arthur William (died 29th December 1961, age 78) and Grace Whittleston (née Mitchellhil - died 02nd July 1950, age 69). Husband of Frances Hellena Bertha Whittleston (née Cornwall, later Davies - died 09th February 2005), of Frankton Junction, Auckland, New Zealand.
