NOTE ON DATES: IMPORTANT: For consistency, the Date is given as the date the mission TOOK OFF since the precise time of a loss is not always certain. Take Off date is unambigous and fixed in the official records, but obviously in those cases where the incident occurred before midnight UK time, then the Take Off Date will be the same as the Incident Date. Of course, most Bomber Command missions flew through midnight, therefore a Luftwaffe claim against a plane - or a locally generated crash report - may record the incident as occurring on the day following our Take Off Date. Bear this in mind when cross-referencing to our Luftwaffe Victories by Name/Date Database and other Luftwaffe sources. In some cases other sources may quote the date following our date, using locally generated reports as their source. To add to the potential for confusion, remember to take into account a Luftwaffe recorded date will be in local time, 1 hour ahead of UK time. When we discover a validated Incident Date we change our record if necessary.



Our hosting service imposes a 4-character search minimum for database tables. We have modified our databases to support 3-character name searches.

Add 'x' to 3-character name: e.g. to search for 'coe' put 'coex' in search box, for 'fox' put 'foxx'.

Born on the 11th August 1915 at Rauaroa. Worked as a self employed labourer in the Danneville area. Member of Wairarapa and obtained his 'A' licence on the 24th February 1938. Enlisted at 15th March 1941 at Levin. Embarked for Canada on the 29th April 1941. Awarded his air gunner badge on the 24th November 1941 and his commission.

Embarked for England on the 13th December 1941. After serving with various units joined 11 Operational Training Unit on the 13th May 1942. Joined 75 squadron on the 12th August 1942. Son of William George Thomas Mills (died 26th April 1970, age 85) and of Caroline Helen Mills (née Hall - died 04th October 1978, age 89 - both buried at Mangatera Cemetery, Dannevirke), of Dannevirke, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. A total of 106 flying hours logged and on his 04th operational sortie.

1943-07-05StirlingIIIEF436AA-AMepal2345Gardening Stirling was lost without trace whilst on a mine-laying sortie (Gardening) off the Frisian island. Claimed by Oblt Georg-Hermann Greiner Killed Age 25Runnymede Panel 196Stirling EF436, piloted by Flight Sergeant R. Thomas, was lost without trace whilst on a mine-laying sortie off the Fresian islands, on 5-6 July 1943. All the crew were killed. Reliable reports from the Dutch said that the aircraft had been shot down by a night fighter over the sea, 12 miles North West of Terscherlling (the middle island of the Southern Frisian Group) at approximately 02:31 hours. The night fighter was captained by Oblt. Georg-Hermann Grenier, of IV/NJG1, this was his sixth kill out of a total of 51. The kill is confirmed in Grenier’s war records.
