The yellow and black plane in the backgrond is the infamous GeeBee, the "Flying Milk Bottle". It is said that only one man survived flying this plane, Eddie Rickenbacker.

I remember seeing footage from an air race where one of these was rounding a pylon and the fabric stripped off the upper surface of the right wing and it plowed a long line in the turf!
