The Air Force Memorial

We never got very close to this memorial.

This picture was taken through the window of the moving bus as we passed by, some distance away.

I, personally, have never felt the same empathy with the Air Force that I did for the Army Air Force although I did a number of active duty tours with them after the war.

The 3500 man (?) 1939 Army Air Corps grew to 4,500,000 in 1945.

It was a huge force of non-professional but dedicated soldiers that did an incredible job.

We pilots referred to ourselves as "commissioned civilians" and the Army never understood the lack of a great divide between officers and enlisted men that existed in air crews or between pilots and their mechanics.
