Charles Henry Dills joined Company C of the 5th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry with his father, Daniel Dills, and his uncle, Charles Dills. He spent 3 1/2 years, first in the Indian Wars in Minnesota, including the Battle of Fort Ridgeley. He was at Vicksburg and then on up the Tennessee River.
He was ultimately mustered out at Demopolis Alabama on the 6th of September 1865.This is his discharge certificate. It was folded, probably kept in his pocket as he made his way back to Minnesota.
