Son of Robert Hawley Wagner (died 14th January 1950, age 57) and Ida Beryl Wagner (née Lazier - died in 1971, age 78), of Napanee, Ontario, Canada. His older brother, Richard, was two years older. The family lived in North Hollywood while their father, Bob, worked for Warner Bros. The entire family - Billy's uncles and cousins - were in the motion picture business. Richard joined the US Army in 1942, but Billy was living in Napanee by the end of the 1930’s when his parents moved back to their original home. He joined the Royal Bank of Canada, and, as you know, joined the RCAF on November 30th, 1942, against his parents wishes. The only personal titbit about Billy in the RCAF was told to me by his brother many years ago. Billy flew a total of 11 missions, but each mission was exceedingly difficult for him to fly. He admitted to his brother, while they were on leave in New York City in 1944, that he faked illness to get out of one mission. Apparently this was not uncommon among bomber crews. The last thing he told his brother before he parted was that he believed he was never coming back. It was the last time Richard saw his brother. Billy was declared missing in action. His parents never knew of his fate, although they firmly believed he was alive, until he was officially declared killed in action in December 1945. 10 Operations - with 53.10 operational flying hours logged. | Commemorated Rheinberg War Cemetery, Coll. grave 18. Son Of William A. And Gladys M. Washbrook, Of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. Commenced operations on 13 December, bombing bridge 286 at Nakorn Chaisri, On 1 January 1945 they bombed the Bangkok railway bridge at Anakwin, and two days later attacked Bridge 19 on the Burma-Siam Railway. Killed in action during this operation when Liberator KH214 was shot down and crashed into dense jungle. All the crew were killed. The Squadron O.R.B. states: ‘Aircraft “D” at 1335 hours at 400 feet was seen to be hit by bursting LAA and crashed just NE of the bridge at Milestone 37.’ Eddie Gilbert, one of the pilots who was on the raid: “I saw Brodie crash you know. Three of us went after the same bridge and a locomotive stopped halfway across. It was in a valley, steep hills on both sides. We were five hundred feet, lower than the hills, Wallace the Fiji guy, went in first. Steve followed him and I was right behind. There were gun positions on the hills, both sides of the bridge. They hit Wallace, then they got Steve, hit his number 4. I could see the flames. Steve and Murray did a good job, everything they could, jettisoned the bombs, got the prop feathered, as fast as anyone could. They tried to climb but there wasn’t room. Hit the top of a hill just one big explosion”.’ | Aircrew Deaths Database Allied Losses Database Liberator KH214 Archive Report KH214 |

Crashed at Wapenveld Holland | Commemorated Amersfoort (Oud Leusden) General Cemetery, Plot 13. Row 5. Grave 96. Netherlands (Holland). Excavation of crash site in Holland 2014 ![]() Of the crew of seven, only three crew members were officially accounted for, and are buried near Amersfoort. The other four were officially still Missing in Action, and remembered on the Runnymede memorial. However, a war grave at the local cemetery at Wapenveld contains the remains of 2 unidentified crew members that were recovered from the wreck in the weeks after the 1943 crash when the main wreckage was lifted from the canal. Now after 73 years all crew members will have a final resting place: Sgt. Thomas Victor Trollope (tailgunner, age 22), W/O Frederick Henry Blake (pilot, age 26) and WO2 Rodney Webber (gunner, age 21) had been identified in 1943 and are buried in Oud Leusden. Sgt. Philip Henry Eldridge (wireless operator, age 29), Sgt. William David Hawkins (navigator, age 23), Sgt. John Ceredig Jones (bombaimer, age 31) and Sgt. Gerard Stanley Walters (engineer, age 22) had been declared missing in 1943. Unidentified remains of 2 crew members found during recovery operations in 1943 have been buried in Wapenveld since 1943, but did not account for all four crew members. A further investigation and recovery effort shortly after the war did not produce any further remains. The 2014 full excavation did, and the BIDKL was then able to identify all four remaining missing crew members. They will be laid to rest in Wapenveld. The existing memorial headstone to the unknown RAF crewmember(s) that was erected by local villagers will be retained and joined by four CWGC headstones. | Aircrew Deaths Database Allied Lossed Database DT795 |

Son Of David And Pola Zareikin, Of Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. His Brother Samuel Also Died On Service. Halifax NP944 was one of 10 engaged in moonlight mine-laying operations off Heligoland and was attacked by an enemy JU-88 night fighter aircraft. Pilot Officer Zareikin was killed during the attack and was the only casualty. The mid-upper gunner, P/C. Cochrane of Jackson, Michigan, USA. shot the enemy aircraft down when it made its next attack. The pilot, Flying Officer W.T. Watson of Toronto, Ontario managed to make a crash landing of the badly damaged aircraft at the Ford aerodrome, England. On 1944-10-05, Squadron Leader A. Ross Dawson, the Chief Technical Officer with 424/433 Sqns at Skipton on Swale, wrote in his diary: "433 Squadron were on a mining or "gardening" effort today with 10 kites. Things went very smoothly & we got them all off in good time. The weather closed in here however later on & we couldn't get them back so 8 were diverted to Tholthorpe and 2 went to Carnaby. M-Mike of 433 was badly shot up with a night fighter & is a cat B. The tail gunner had his head blown off with a 20mm cannon explosive shell. However the MU gunner claimed the JU88 as a "probable" so we hope he knocked it down Ok." | Aircrew Deaths Database | |||

| 4380 | Kirby | James Burton | F/O | KIFA. | FE | 420Sqn (RCAF) | Halifax NA184 | 5 Mar 1945 - Iced up and crashed. Extreme weather conditions over the Vale of York saw a large number of the bombing force ice up. Some fell out of the sky in flat spins. The pilot probably ordered the crew to bale out. 3 three of them escaped but 2 sustained serious injuries, probably having baled out too low. At 16.50hrs NA184 crashed near Marrow Flatts Farm, Copt Hewick, on the Ripon side of Dishforth airfield. The remaining 4 crew were either killed in the crash or had baled out too low. | RAFVR Crew Member. | 4381 | Main | R B | Injured | Pilot | 26OTU | Wellington X3924 | 1943-11-06 | Wellington LN 295 took off from RAF Lichfield for an evening cross-country training. At 2208 hours when flying on a south easterly course at an altitude of 16,000 feet, the aircraft collided with Wellington aircraft X 3924 (Sergeant R B Main (RCAF) (Pilot)) from 26 OTU flying on a north easterly course at the same altitude. Both machines crashed near the main gate at RAF Alconbury not far from the village of Abbots Ripton. Both Pilots had been distracted and saw each other too late to avoid a collision. The pilot of X 3924 pushed the control column forward, causing his tail unit to come into collision with LN 295 on the starboard side in the forward part of the aircraft near the pilot’s cockpit. X 3924 then developed an uncontrolled steep spiral dive to port, which finally resulted into an inverted spin, throwing the pilot through the roof of the cockpit. The aircraft continued to dive at very high speed and it disintegrated due to stress on the airframe. It would have been extremely difficult for the crew to abandon the aircraft, although the Captain had ordered abandon. LN 295 went into a dive from which the pilot was unable to recover. He gave orders to abandon the aircraft, but the inter-com was useless and the call light could not be found. He did not know whether any of the crew had received the order to bale out. The pilot was injured in the collision and finally baled out at 7,000 feet. Both pilots wore their chutes. Five of the crew in LN 295 were killed, Heffernan was injured. Five (three RAF and two RCAF) crew members from X 3924 were killed and the Pilot was injured. | Full details non-Canadians are here: Allied Losses & Incidents X3924 | ||||||
