REASON FOR LOSS:
Taking off from RAF Catfoss on a navigation exercise.
Understood to have crashed into the sea at 11:35 hrs about 50 miles east of Flamborough Head in poor weather conditions, other aircraft in the area reported clouds down to sea level. Despite an extensive search only the body of the pilot was recovered.

Sgt. James Hanley Hamill. Great Bircham Churchyard (St. Mary) Plot 1. Row 2. Grave 17. Born on the 26th October 1916 at Masterton. Worked as a salesman for P. Hamill and Company - his fathers business, prior to service.Obtained his pilots licence on the on the 06th February 1939 with Wairarapa and Ruahine Aero Club. Enlisted 13th February 1940 at Levin. Awarded pilots wings on the 09th August 1940 and promoted to sergeant on the 21st September 1940. Son of Patrick and Kate Hamill (née Hanby), of Masterton, Wellington. New Zealand. 152 Solo flying hours logged.
