REASON FOR LOSS:
Taking off at 06:20 hrs with 10 others from the squadron but failed to meet up with the bombers. They decided to continue to the target area of St. Omer in France. They encountered heavy Luftwaffe presence when crossing the French coast at 08:32 hrs.
F/O. Middleton was shot down just north of Audruicq in France, killing the young New Zealander.

F/O. William Arthur Middleton. Dunkirk Town Cemetery. Plot 2. Row 2. Grave 17. Born on the 31st December 1918, the son of Frederick Charles Middleton and of Jean Caroline Myrtle Middleton, of Auckland City, New Zealand. 370 flying hours logged and having completed 74 operational operations.
