K7036 With 114 Squadron at Wyton and written off with 2 flying hours. An inexperienced pilot (P/O D.Perry) locked the brakes on landing causing the aircraft to flip over and break its back. P/O Douglas Perry was unhurt but was killed on 10/05/38 in the crash of K7037.

K7053 With 90 Squadron at Bicester and destroyed with 21 hours 45 minutes flying time when it dived out of cloud while on a navex and blew up on hitting high ground at Brown Clee Hill, near Stanton Long, Shropshire: Sgt E.Moorhouse, AC2 A.G.Martin and AC1 S.H.W.Coomber, were killed and are buried in Market Drayton Cemetery.

K7049 With School of Army Co-Operation at Old Sarum when it crashed with 75 flying hours after control was lost in cloud at Pitton Hill, near Salisbury. P/O Peter Edwards was thrown out and killed, Cpl T.Robson was killed and there may have been a third crew member who was also killed but I do not know where he or Robson is buried. (The accident report shows it as still being with 90 Squadron.)

The aircraft returned to the airfield but it spun in on approach. Sgt John H.Williams, flying solo, was killed. I still seek his grave.

K7110 With 114 Squadron at Wyton and DBR when the pilot, Sgt S.H.P.Smith, baled out after losing control in cloud, leaving the Observer, Cpl Tom Barnes, to belly-land the a/c which he managed near Hinckley, Leicestershire, killing a cow. Neither Barnes nor the Wop/AG, AC A.E.Dearn, was hurt. The pilot was court martialled and Barnes was awarded the AFM. (Barnes later became a pilot and was killed on 15/02/41 when T2125 of 114 Squadron was shot down over Holland).

The church of St. Margaret and All Saints at Wyton has been out of use since around 1990 and was in the process of being converted into a very luxurious private house when I visited it in August 2008. The churchyard is now a garden with the old grave stones stacked in a heap against one wall. But the military graves plot on the other side of the building is well maintained and will, I am assured, continue to be preserved. Perry’s grave is in the row on the right of the photograph.

P/O M.L.McColm unhurt, Cpl D.O.Day killed when his parachute fouled an aerial (I do not know the location of his grave) and AC1 J.H.Gordon unhurt.

F/O H.Edwards, Sgt Nish and AC1 Theophilus were all injured, Edwards spending nine months in hospital but recovering fully and going on to be awarded VC, DSO and DFC during the war and subsequently becoming Governor of Western Australia.

(This may be the F/L Robert Winston Arnold Gibbs who was lost without trace on 13/07/43 in Lancaster III JA676 while with 467 Squadron on a raid on Turin and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.)

L1293 With 107 Squadron at Wattisham and DBR when the u/c was retracted in error after landing at Boscombe Down.

L1510 With 25 Squadron at Hawkinge as a Mk If and the u/c collapsed in a heavy landing at base. Became 1637M.

L8368 With 23 Squadron at Wittering as a Mk IF and collided with L1448 of the same unit, crashing 2 miles south-east of the airfield. Sgt J.A.Bullard was killed; however he saved the life of an Oundle schoolboy passenger by giving him his parachute and pushing him out of the aircraft. L1448 landed safely and was repaired. The location of Bullard’s grave is unknown to me.

L8405 With Central Flying School at Upavon and hit the ground when an engine failed and it lost height on an overshoot.

L1156 With 110 Squadron at Wattisham and overshot landing at Debden after an engine cut, running into a wood.

25/07/39

L1465 With 23 Squadron at Wittering as a Mk IF and crashed near Grantham, Lincolnshire after being abandoned when lost in bad weather. F/O P.Walker baled out safely but Sgt L.G.Tarrant was killed and his burial place is unknown to me. (The pilot was probably the F/L Percy Don Walker killed when L1452 crashed on 29/11/39 while on a searchlight co-operation sortie and is buried in Scopwick Church Burial Ground, Lincolnshire.)

L6630 With Blenheim Collection Flight and DBR when the u/c collapsed in a heavy landing at Heliopolis during a ferry flight to India.

L1241 With 25 Squadron at Hawkinge when it overshot a landing at base and hit a bank. P/O B.Rofe unhurt. Became 1635M.

L1384 With 84 Squadron at Shaibah and crashed on landing at base when the pilot misjudged his height at night.

07/08/39

N6180 With 107 Squadron at Wattisham and crashed at Beachy Head while lost in bad weather. The aircraft was flying towards the sea in mist and descending when it hit the ground just before the cliff edge, then slid along the ground to fall over and down into the sea. Sgt H.D.P.Farrow, Sgt A.J.W.Sargeant and AC2 Leslie Phillips were killed together with Miss M.Savery, a civilian on the ground.

L1282 With 57 Squadron at Upper Heyford crashed in forced landing in bad visibility at Great Canfield, Essex when it hit a tree.

L1546 With 39 Squadron at Risalpur and dived into the ground at Kutumba, India, when control was lost after it was struck by lightning in a storm and caught fire. A civilian employee of Bristols Mr. Cecil Rendle Tapper managed to bale out as did AC2 Richard Wallace Bloss, but three men were killed.

L1475 With 64 Squadron at Church Fenton and DBR when a tyre burst taxying at Duxford and it tipped up.

L1112 With 82 Squadron at Cranfield and DBR when it crashed into a ditch in forced landing at Chellaston near Derby after an engine cut.

14/08/39

L1446 With 18 Squadron at Upper Heyford and DBF when it overshot a landing at base and hit a fuel dump. Sgt A.W.S.Thomas was injured. (562935 Sgt Alfred William Swinburne Thomas died in France on 18/05/40 although I cannot discover the exact circumstances.)

16/08/39

L1436 With 25 Squadron at Hawkinge and landed at Sutton Bridge with u/c unlocked. P/O A.Pattison unhurt. Became 1648M.

19/08/39

L8378 With 34 Squadron en route to Singapore and ditched 70 miles south-east of Syracuse, Sicily. Cause unknown and the crew was rescued by a French vessel.

29/08/39

N6152 With 114 Squadron at Wyton when the u/c collapsed on landing at base. Became 1649M.

30/08/39

N6187 With 107 Squadron at Wattisham and crashed in a night landing at base.

01/09/39

L1352 With 21 Squadron at Watton and DBR when it crashed in the circuit at base following engine failure.

Thus, having had the Blenheim in service for some two and a half years prior to the outbreak of the Second World War, the RAF had lost 117 of them at the cost of 63 lives. The next few years were to prove even more expensive.
