REASON FOR LOSS:

Taking off at 16.36 hrs on the heaviest raid of the German capital of the war with 769 aircraft taking part. Diversionary raids were mounted by Mosquitoes on Kiel and Hannover. The night was very clear although no moon, excellent visibility with cloud at about 12,000 ft - great conditions for the Luftwaffe night fighters to attack.
