Opposed the 6 March, 1944 Berlin Raid when he commanded I/JG-11 at Rotenburg. His 55th victory on 6 March, a B-17 in the Ahlhorn area. One known victory, a P-47C # 41-6238 of 4FG, 336FS on 28 July, 1943, just west of Rotterdam. Another was a P-47 of 78FG on 30 July, 1943, either L/Col Melvin F Mc Nickle (POW) or his wingman, Lt Byers, both in the Ravenstein-Elden area in Holland. He was the last to command II/JG-104. Bowers/Lednicer, 64 victories. 629 combat missions.

On this day, he was flying wing for Rolf Hermichen out of Rotenburg. Shot down with wounds on this date by a P-47 of 78FG flown by Lt Robert Wise. He bailed successfully, but his left arm was amputated as a result of his elbow being shot away. The AC crashed at Buente near Bassum. |
