Shot down by AA fire at Stolberg on the way back to Merzhausen. Too low to bail out, he managed to belly land and had just gotten out when the plane burst into flame. He had been shot down once before in Russia Added: On 09/07/43 when his engine was hit by Soviet Flak and the plane began to burn. He bailed and landed between the front lines until German soldiers rescued him. A subsequent hospital stay put him out of action until 11/44 (CKönig). Flew as Erich Hartmanns wingman while in 7/JG-52. At different times, wingman for Oblt. O. Decker (07-08/42), H. Graf, Zwernemann (09-10/42), G.Rall, Wachiowiak and Hrdlicka. Over 200 operational flights, 70 combat. Injured 27 August, 1942 when his G-2 ran out of fuel and he belly landed near Stalingrad. Lost his G-4 Werk # 19496 to flak NE of Belgorod. Bailed safely, but spent many months in hospital before posting to JG-2. His first known Soviet victory, an Il-2 on 6 August, 1942. A Yak-1 on 23 August, 1942. Two LaGG-3s on 8 September, 1942. One of many Soviet victories, an Il-2 on 31 July, 1942. A Pe-2 on 6 August, 1942. One known Desert victory, a Maryland 30 km southwest of El Djem on 1 March, 1943. Another Desert victory, a Boston on 12 March, 1943, and an Aircobra on 13 March, 1943. His 38th victory, a P-51 on 6 February, 1944. His 40th, a P-51 SW of Lago de Bracciano (Rome) on 18 April, 1944. He also had numerous victories in Sicily. One known victory over the Ardennes, a B-26 at Roetgen on 23 December, 1944. Bowers/Lednicer, 45 to 96 victories. Added: emergency landing at airfield Rhein-Main. uninjured on 20/03/45. Was first MIA but his plane and remains were found in 8m depth near Schotten Betzenrod in 1951 (CKönig)
