Wartime Grave outside of London, seen on Military Channel. Added: During a raid on London, he had already been damaged and on fire as a result of earlier combat. Hurricane pilot, Sgt Raymond Holmes, of No.504 Sq., rammed the Dornier when his guns jammed. The Dornier tail section separated, and the bomber crashed at Victoria Railway Station, Central London, near Buckingham Palace. Both Zehbe and Holmes bailed, but Zehbe died of his wounds later (You Tube News video). Added: He had been set onfire during combat with 4 to 6 Spitfires over London during a noontime raid. He crashed at Oval cricket grounds about a half mile from Buckingham Palace. This source suggests he was beaten by civilians, but a witness claims he had been wounded. He died of his wounds on 16 September, 1940, and was buried in the Brookwood Cem., Woking, Surrey (Luftwaffe Officer Career Summaries, spelled as Zehbe. His grave marker is clearly Zehbe). Lehnis, Richter and Matern were buried at Acklam Road Cemetery, Thornaby. Manekes body was recovered 26 November,1997, by Water Board Workers, and interned in Thornaby also, with his other crew members on 14 October, 1998, after a search for family members was unsuccessful. Friend Norm Lambert of Columbus, OH. was a member of the Recovery Team in 1997. The Observer was found still sitting in his seat, just as he was on that fateful January night.

(Added by Pietrzak Youngs) Initially trained as a bomber observer and assigned to I./KG 153 at Merseburg. Observer with 4./KG 2 in 1939. Flew in Poland campaign, destroying three trains. In France campaign his crew shot down two Morane 406 fighters and took part in low-level strikes. On an early mission over England, 1940-07-11 his Dornier 17 was shot up by Hurricanes near Harwich. Bornschein, radio operator Ofw. Werner Borner and flight engineer Fw. Friedrich Lohrer were all wounded. The bomber’s pilot, Joachim Genzow, who later won the Knight’s Cross, escaped injury. After recovering from his wounds, Bornschein was sent to Flight Training School A/B 3 at Guben, where he trained as a pilot. Promoted to Oberleutnant in November 1940. Late 1941 he returned to 4./KG 2 on Dornier 217 E. Bornschein attacked industrial targets, port facilities and shipping, sinking two merchant ships totaling 9,000 tons. Led 4./KG 2 as Staffelkapitän from June 1942 to February1943. Promoted to Hauptmann. In early 1943 Bornschein assigned to Flight Training School A/B 3 as a company commander. May 1943 he was transferred to the Führer-Kurierstaffel as Staffelkapitän. In April 1944 the unit was based in southern Germany, as nighfighters. On the night of 26-27 April 1944 Bornschein intercepted British bombers attacking Schweinfurt. he shot down a Lancaster III of 106 Sq., ND853 "ZN-J", 15km WSW of Schweinfurt, but was then shot down himself. Bornschein was killed, along with his radio operator Stbfw. Wilhelm Steurer (who had been a member of Bornschein’s crew in KG 2) and flight engineer Fw. (Added by Pietrzak Youngs) Leutnant Horst Baldauf (May 24, 1920 - June 10, 1944) was one of the best reconnaissance pilots owned by Aufklärungsgruppe 22. The aircraft that he usually piloted were Dornier Do 17 P & F and Heinkel He 111H. He was lost on duty in Vinnitsa, Ukraine, on June 10, 1944. Until this moment his fate was not known with certainty, but most likely his plane had been shot down by Soviet aircraft. For his dedication Baldauf was awarded the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes posthumously on August 8, 1944 as Leutnant and Beobachter in 2. (Fern) Staffel / Aufklärungsgruppe 22 / Luftwaffen-Kommando Don. At that time the unit (Aufklärungsgruppe 22) was dissolved! |
