V1.01 Data derived from many sources. Perfection is our goal: Corrections and Additions are encouraged and requested. Please Email us

35,000+ Entries in Database (as of October 2025): largest in the world
The only authorised publication of the Kracker Luftwaffe Archive: anything else has been stolen and infringes my copyright.

Please email us any photos you have. We will acknowledge you in the database unless requested otherwise.
This is a non-political research resource. The authors of this material do not condone hatred in any form,
neither do they support oppressive and despotic regimes or political systems. See our Statement

In some cases you can see a pilot's extended record of victories in date order from our Luftwaffe Victories database

There is a rogue group of copyright infringers who have stolen a much earlier version of my data - from at least 10 years ago - and have the affrontery to publish that, along with using my name, on their poorly researched website. They claim this is the 'original' Kracker Archive, a ridiculous claim since my Archive has been in a state of continuous development for over 30 years and nobody - NOBODY - has the original. They have no right to use my name or my data and readers who come across this nonsense should do nothing to encourage theft of this nature. I am outraged by this blatant theft and misrepresentation of my lifetime's work. The ONLY person I have ever authorized to publish my data and use my name is Kelvin Youngs, who earned my trust and respect many years ago and is authorized by me to publish my work on whichever website he organizes, currently this being its present home at the highly respected Aircrew Remembered.

POW 27 October, 1940 after bailing out over Canterbury, 25 km north of Dover, during aerial combat in "Yellow 2". "I was coming down by parachute, it was a meadow and my aircraft was coming down in the middle of a herd of cows, and the herd of cows was going away wildly you know, with tales raised. I could see people come running across the field and of course when they were mainly civilians, I was scared because you know they were German bombs, of course there was war. I was afraid maybe I would fall into civilian hands and I would be beaten up!". Promptly captured by Canadian soldiers billeted in England. Interned January, 1941 at Camp # 30 at Bowmanville, near Toronto with von Werra. Attempted three escapes, making it as far as NY, but re-captured each time. After the 3rd attempt in April, 1942, he felt as if he had done his duty, and remained a POW the remainder of the war. Interviewed on the Discovery Channels Great Escape Program, including some of his home movies. His first victories were three Spitfires on the ground at RAF Manston before ever scoring his first aerial victory. His first victory, a Hurricane near Tilbury on 18 September, 1940. Three successful manned flights took place, and a group of the fighters were readied for intercept missions, but never materialized (1945 Accidents List/S.Youngs). Added: Entered Luftwaffe in 11/39. Was in the same pupil group at LKS 4 as Ulrich Planck (see own entry). In 02/43 he was sentenced to 4 months confinement and reduction in rank to Flieger for dereliction while drunk - later commuted to 6 weeks because Göring intervened - released 06/43. Flew missions behind lines with Kommando Toska. On 14/03/44 he was unharmed when his a/c was shot up by British troops near Lager I (Wadi Tamlet). In 08/44 he freed 23 trapped comrades behind enemy lines under fire in an Arado Ar 232 combat zone transport during a life-threatening low-level flight mission in Ukraine. In 11/44 last missions for KG 200. Nominated for DKG by Skorzeny. He was the first to make a vertical take-off manned rocket flight. Prior to the test flight it was assured to receive his old rank again, which was done postmortem. Prof. Dr. Planck, the cousin of Nobel Prize winner in physics Max Planck, is still alive in 10/2025! Received his Pilot Badge on 15/07/40 and Combined Pilot/Obsv Badge on 21/10/42. Crew in 10/44: Fhj-Gefr Soltendieck, Fw Obermann, OFhr Marbach. There is a book written about him " Vom Fernaufklärer über Eismeer und Nordsee zum Jet-Piloten - Fliegen – mein verwirklichter Traum" (Adrian Matthes, Zeitzeugenversand). Promo excerpt of the book: "From 1942 onward, he flew aerial reconnaissance over the Karelian jungle and witnessed the great convoy battles in the Arctic Ocean. During the destruction of Convoy PQ17, he remained with the convoy for hours as a contact point and guided the U-boats toward it. He penetrated deep into northern Russian airspace, reaching the limits of his Ju 88's range. He flew through Flak fire over Murmansk, toward Archangelsk, observed rail traffic on the Murmansk Railway, and spied on a polar station in the Arctic. He traveled tens of thousands of kilometers over the North Cape, Spitsbergen, and the White Sea under the midnight sun or in the glow of the Northern Lights, providing vital recce data. Starting in 1943, he was deployed over the North Sea and North Atlantic, recce of Allied naval bases in the Orkney, Shetland, and Faroe Islands. Equipped with a Ju 188 and a ship-search radar, he searched the North Sea for the first signs of an impending invasion. Flying low, he snaked his way through the balloon barriers at Scapa Flow, spotting aircraft carriers and battleships. At the end of 1944, he was transferred to a newly formed night recce squadron and was to be trained on the Ju 388. Nothing came of it, and because of his dual qualifications as a pilot and observer, he was retrained in the Ar 234 in the winter of 1944, becoming one of the first jet recce pilots in aviation history. Based in Rheine, his squadron flew missions over the Netherlands, Belgium, and England to uncover Allied supply lines, provide target data for the Kriegsmarine, and observe the impact of V2 rockets. Lieutenant Planck ultimately became the second-to-last German pilot to fly a successful mission over England. The retreat in April 1945 swept him across northern Germany to Denmark, until he finally flew his jet to Norway on May 5, where he was taken prisoner by the British."

Added by Stefan Pietrzak Ypoungs: Flight Lieutenant Duke-Woolley, of 23 Squadron, who reported that at 0050 hrs: –‘Whilst flying at 6,000 feet three miles north-east of Kings Lynn, I observed aircraft subsequently identified as a He 111 held in searchlights at 8,000 feet. Time 0045 hrs. Observed ball of fire which I took to be a Blenheim in flames break away from behind tail of enemy aircraft (E/A). Climbed to engage E/A and attacked from below tail after searchlights were no longer holding. Range 50 yards. E/A returned fire and appeared to throttle back suddenly. Own speed 130 – 140 mph. Estimated E/A slowed to 110 mph. Delivered five attacks. Air gunner (AC Derek Bell) fired several short bursts at varying ranges. After last front gun attack, Air Gunner reported port engine of E/A on fire. Returned to base and landed, starboard engine unserviceable. Several bullet holes in wings and fuselage of own aircraft including hit in starboard wing and fuselage by cannon’. The enemy raider, a He 111-H4 (fuselage code 5J + DM) of II/KG 4’s staff flight crash-landed in shallow water just offshore at Blakeney Point in Norfolk, a vast expense of flat beach, perfect for a forced-landing. The crew, the Gruppenkommander, Major Dietrich Freiherr von Massenbach, Oberleutnant Ulrich Jordan, Oberfeldwebel Max Leimer and Feldwebel Karl Amberger, swam and waded ashore, covered by auxiliary coastguard men from their nearby station. Sensibly, the Germans surrendered and were taken into custody, confirming having shot down Close’s Blenheim before being despatched by Duke-Woolley and Bell.
