Photo Added by Stefan Pietrzak Youngs ![]() In July 1939 he was with 3./JG 21 (later 9./JG 54) and on the 10.5.1940 achieved his first victory by shooting down a Gloster-Gladiator. At the end of the France-expedition, he had shot down four aircraft, and gained a further fourteen victories during the Battle of Britain. On the 10.10.1940, he was promoted to Staffelkapitan of 8./JG 54 and joined 9./JG 54 on the 28.11.1940. He was awarded the Knight's Cross in March 1941 having scored 19 victories. During the Balkan Peninsula expedition, he shot down two Yugoslavian airplanes while flying Bf 109s. While flying on the Eastern Front, he had increased his tally of victories to 39 by the end of 1941, including four Russian bombers on the 30.6.1941, achieving his 50th victory on the 29.9.1942. His squadron was transferred to the West, and on the 17.4.1943 he accidentally rammed a B-17 Flying Fortress while making a head on attack thereby scoring his 57th victories and later shot down a Spitfire. On the 1.8.1943, he was posted to command IV./JG 51 and returned to the Eastern front. From 9.5.1944, he led II./JG 3 in the defence of the Reich and on the invasion front. In August 1944 he was made commander of II./EJG 2 and then joined JV 44 Galland on the 1 April 1945 flying Me 262 jet aircraft until the end of the war. On 5. 6.1943 he was awarded the honorary trophy of the commander in chief of the Luftwaffe and on 30.8.1943 as a member of the 5th season the German Cross in Gold. In 1943, temporarily used in the staff of the 2nd Squadron of the squadron, he came in 1944 in the 7th Squadron of the now Schlachtgeschwaders (SG) 2 continue to use on the Eastern Front, after over 600 enemy flights he was Oberfeldwebel on 30.11.1944 with the Knight's Cross excellent, in March 1945 he flew his 700th mission, a total of Edhofer had destroyed 84 tanks and scored an aerial victory. Flew combat missions for five years. Wounded seriously several times, once on 8 September, 1941 during Operation Barbarossa; again on 1 June, 1943, in Werk# 16391. On 1 June, 1943, he was mistaken by Wilhelm Steinmann, as a Spitfire, and shot down. For his punishment, Steinmann was sent to Romania. He bore the marks of his valor, said Johannes Steinhoff. "He had a piece of plastic in his skull, and a face whose two halves no longer quite matched". This, a result of a crash in 171559 after combat with "4 mots". So disgusted with the Luftwaffe High Command, he renounced his RK, but continued to oppose the Allied bombing raids up to the very end. Deceased 10/31/1961.
