Three more B-17s in the Dessau area on 24 March, 1945. On this same date, 24 March, 1945, he was shot down by a P-51 over the Brandenburg/Brest airfield. Wounded in the face and left hand by plexiglass fragments, he managed to bail safely from 6500 meters. He made a rough landing in a nearby forest, injuring his left knee, and unable to stand. The rescuing Germans thought he was a Negro (American) from the sight of all the dried blood on his face. When they opened his jacket they saw he was a German Lt., and was treated better! His Ju 88 was hit by another Stuka's bomb and crashed in flames, killing its crew: Uffz Alfred Etienne, Obs; Gefr Gustav Panzer R/O and Uffz Gustaz Brettscheider, Gnr...Brandenburg found in the forest southeast Dubberow (Dubrowo) 10 km southwest of Cholm. Later army units found the remains of the machine and were able to identify Brandenburg on the basis of his Knight's Cross. He rests on the war cemetery in Korpovo (RUS); Endgrape layer: block 16.
