After last front gun attack, Air Gunner reported port engine of E/A on fire. Returned to base and landed, starboard engine unserviceable. Several bullet holes in wings and fuselage of own aircraft including hit in starboard wing and fuselage by cannon’. The enemy raider, a He 111-H4 (fuselage code 5J + DM) of II/KG 4’s staff flight crash-landed in shallow water just offshore at Blakeney Point in Norfolk, a vast expense of flat beach, perfect for a forced-landing. The crew, the Gruppenkommander, Major Dietrich Freiherr von Massenbach, Oberleutnant Ulrich Jordan, Oberfeldwebel Max Leimer and Feldwebel Karl Amberger, swam and waded ashore, covered by auxiliary coastguard men from their nearby station. There is a book written about him " Vom Fernaufklärer über Eismeer und Nordsee zum Jet-Piloten - Fliegen – mein verwirklichter Traum" (Adrian Matthes, Zeitzeugenversand). Promo excerpt of the book: "From 1942 onward, he flew aerial reconnaissance over the Karelian jungle and witnessed the great convoy battles in the Arctic Ocean. During the destruction of Convoy PQ17, he remained with the convoy for hours as a contact point and guided the U-boats toward it. He penetrated deep into northern Russian airspace, reaching the limits of his Ju 88's range. He flew through Flak fire over Murmansk, toward Archangelsk, observed rail traffic on the Murmansk Railway, and spied on a polar station in the Arctic. He traveled tens of thousands of kilometers over the North Cape, Spitsbergen, and the White Sea under the midnight sun or in the glow of the Northern Lights, providing vital recce data.
Starting in 1943, he was deployed over the North Sea and North Atlantic, recce of Allied naval bases in the Orkney, Shetland, and Faroe Islands. Equipped with a Ju 188 and a ship-search radar, he searched the North Sea for the first signs of an impending invasion. Flying low, he snaked his way through the balloon barriers at Scapa Flow, spotting aircraft carriers and battleships.
At the end of 1944, he was transferred to a newly formed night recce squadron and was to be trained on the Ju 388. Nothing came of it, and because of his dual qualifications as a pilot and observer, he was retrained in the Ar 234 in the winter of 1944, becoming one of the first jet recce pilots in aviation history. Based in Rheine, his squadron flew missions over the Netherlands, Belgium, and England to uncover Allied supply lines, provide target data for the Kriegsmarine, and observe the impact of V2 rockets. Lieutenant Planck ultimately became the second-to-last German pilot to fly a successful mission over England. The retreat in April 1945 swept him across northern Germany to Denmark, until he finally flew his jet to Norway on May 5, where he was taken prisoner by the British."
