His R/O was Oblt Erich Weissflog (DK-G, EK 1 & 2). Victim 29 was F/O John Coulton, a New Zealander, of RAF No. 132 Squadron, commanded by the legendary Geoffrey Page, DSO, DFC and bar. Coulton was sent to Stalag Luft III. His AC was a Spitfire Mk IXB. Four known victories were RAF bombers. on 4 February, 1943, he may have downed the B-17 "El Lobo" of the 305BG, flown by Lt Cornelius A. Jenkins. 710 missions. 22 Day victories and 28 Night victories. He and R/O were injured when his Wk# 720018 hit the ground at the Leeuwarden Holland airfield on 24 November, 1943, cause unknown (DeSwart). His 1st victory, A Hawk-75A, 12 May, 1940. A Morane on 15 May, 1940, no location. Two Spitfires at Dunkirk on 29 May, 1940. A Morane near Dieppe on 7 June, 1940. A Spitfire and a Hurricane in the Portland area on 15 August, 1940. A Hurricane near Aldershot on 30 August, 1940. A Spitfire in the Cambridge area on 31 August, 1940. A Spitfire and two Hurricanes over England on 1 September, 1940. A Spitfire at London on 7 September, 1940. Added: Two Halifax, [one being "JB843" "DY-F", piloted by Sgt K.Gore (KilledInAction (KIA)), of RAF 102 Sq, which crashed at Zand, near Breezand] and a Wellington, the night of 25/26 June, 1943 (T.Boiten/R.Snape). 4 Ielsen, Ernst OttoUffzSeenotflug.Kdo-3He 59N "D-ASAM" (lost 7/1/40) Air-Sea Rescue Operational Clasp POW 1 July, 1940 after being shot down off County Durham coast near Hartlepool, by three Spitfires of RAF No. 72 Sq., piloted by F/Lt Edward Graham, F/O E.John Wilcox and F/Sgt Jack Steere, during a rescue mission. They were looking for a He 115 of 3/Küstenfliegergruppe-106 (conducting a mine-laying operation off the Yorkshire coast), piloted by Ofw Rudolf Worms. The damaged AC made a water landing four mile east of Hartlepool, where the crew managed to escape into their dingy, being rescued by HMS Black Swan. Remaining crew: Lt Hans Joachim Fehske, Observer, Ogefr Erich Philipp, wireless operator and Uffz Stuckmann (or Struckmann), mechanic. Note: although TBT&N lists pilot surname as Ielsen, German Records show him as Nielsen (D.Drury).

On this night, he was saerving as Observer for Uffz Josef Schlosser. The abandoned AC crashed onto a house at Downton, Hale, near Fordingbridge, Hants at 23:45 hours. A double victory on 6 November, 1941; an I-18 and an I-153. An I-18 on 1 April, 1942. On 23 April, 1942, he was shot down with wounds in Werk# 13104 near Ramtzmy. Three P-40s on 12 May, 1942. Two R-5s on 8 June, 1942. Two P-40s on 1 September, 1942. A MiG-3 on 4 September, 1942. A LaGG-3 on 14 September, 1942. A MiG-3 on 16 September, 1942. An I-16 Rata on 22 September, 1942. Two LaGG-3s on 28 September, 1942. A Yak-1 on 23 October, 1942. Two Il-2s on 26 October, 1942. He scored JG-54s 3000th victory on 4 November, 1942 (killed 5 days later). His last three victories, a LaGG-3 and two P-40s on 7 November, 1942. Six Night victories. His military career began in 1939. Added: Lt Heyer is still listed as MIA, and is commemorated at Sologubowka, Russia (D.Drury).

All 9 were RAF Bombers. One such bomber believed to be a Short Stirling III BK718 "WP-M" of No.90 Sq., lost the night of 3/4 July, 1943, target Köln. It's Flt Engr, Sgt Hugh Murray, of Fife Scotland, was KilledInAction (KIA), and buried Overloon War cem Noord Brabant, Neth,. location III.A.I..The inventor of the "Wilde Sau" System, 26 June, 1943. EL 8/2/43. The use of single-engine fighters for night operations. Very costly in terms of pilots and AC. Herrmann came to fighters from bombers. The Bf 109T-1 (questionable) was the type destined for use on the carrier Graff Zepplin, however this project was cancelled by order of Hitler. In January, 1944, he was appointed Kdr of Jagddivision 30, over all three of the Wilde Sau units, 300, 301 & 302. In March 1945, he commanded Sonderkommando-Elbe, a Bf 109 unit whose purpose was to ram Allied bombers. Only about 24 successful attacks were recorded. About 370 combat missions, serving in Spain, Poland, Norway, France Malta and Greece, before founding the Wilde Sau Units. Sank 12 Soviet convoy ships, about 65,000BRT. Also known to have flown Fw 190A-5 "Black 1" as Kdr JG-300. Spent ten long years in Russian captivity. Released with Hartmann, Graf, Wiese and Hans Baur. Deceased 11/5/2010 Düsseldorf.

KIFA 4 May, 1944. His Wk# 18248 was shot down by Italian flak on 7 August, 1943, location not reported, pilot OK. One known victory, a Spitfire on 27 January, 1944. A 2nd, a B-25 on 19 February, 1944. His 2nd per OKL, a B-24 at Wiener Neustadt on 12 April, 1944. One or two of the above may have been unconfirmed. A 3rd, a Final Destruction, a B-24 near Wiener Neustadt on 12 April, 1944. His 3rd per OKL, a B-17 (HSS) 5 km W of Munich on 24 April, 1944.
14 Hergt, O.Fw4(F)/14Ju 88A Werk # 0707 (dam 8/18/41)Observer Operational ClaspHis disposition unknown when his ac made a force landing on 18 August, 1941 at or near the Smolensk airfield, Russia. The ac sustained engine damage causing the landing, resulting in significant damage. Remaining crew: Oblt Hans Joachim Brösicke, Obs (Inj; later served in KG-55) and Uffz W.Bülow, R/O (disp unk). No mention of a Flt Engr (D.Drury).

Wildblood, 10 miles E of Coquet Island. Helm eased the He 111 into a controlled ditching, and it managed to stay afloat for three minutes for three of the crew to evacuate via the roof over the cockpit. The three did manage to get into the dingy. The body of Uffz Karl Lassnig, along with the dingy, washed ashore at Whitley Bay on 1 March, 1940, Several days later, the body of Hans Helm was recovered. Both were buried in the Chevington Cemetery; Lassnig Sec H, Gr 21 & Helm Sec H, Gr 24. It is not known what happened to the third survivor, and he is listed MIA with the remainder of the crew: Uffz Heinrich Buckisch, Ofw Artur Thiele and Gefr Walter Rixen. Added: Buckisch, or Buchisch, has been reported as the pilot (D.Drury).

Entered the Luftwaffe in 1936. 750+ missions. Served in Poland, Norway, Mediterranean and Normandy. He was among the most successful bomber pilots, particularly the anti-shipping role. He sank a total of some 180,000 tons of Allied ships. He survived the war, a U.S. POW. His Observer; Maj Stefan, his R/O was Ofw Franz "Franzel" Schlund, born 10 August, 1913 in Leinen, near Heidelberg (also RK on 8/30/41, 1st R/O to receive the RK), served in the paratroopers in the late war, and survived. His Gunner, Uffz Czipka. His cheif mechanic, Rudi Behm. He was a Channel "splash" victim during the Battle of Britain. Hoehler Personality Photo/Profile. Deceased 10/5/1985 in Spain.

Perhaps his first, a Hurricane southwest of Gazala on 13 December, 1941. A Blenheim over Malta on 11 February, 1942. A British fighter on 2 April, 1942, a P-40 of RAF No. 112 Sq., piloted by Sgt Ibbotson, near Burg el Arab on 5 July, 1942 and two P-40s east southeast of Deir-el-Tarfa N. Africa on 20 October, 1942. Also known , a P-40 over Gazala on 28 April, 1942. A P-40 of SAAF No. 5 Sq. E of El Adem on 17 June, 1942. Opposed 306th BG on 14 April, 1943 while Kdr I/JG-27. Added: Reported court marshaled while in JFF West. Deceased 12 September, 1990 (LOCS).

MIA 21 August, 1942; emergency landing at Lake of Udero due to damage from enemy fire (Source: SIG Norway). Presumed KilledInAction (KIA) since he does not appear on the Mombeek MIA List for JG-5. One known victory, his 1st, a Blenheim of RAF No. 235 Sq. west of Egersünd on 15 June, 1941. On 22 June, 1941, he was involved in a non-operational landing accident at Mandal Norway airfield in his T-2, no mention of his being injured in the crash; aka Hans Dieter (Source: SIG Norway). Added: according to Mombeeck "Rudolf Fenten who was his wingman on his last mission who gave a moving account of his hesitation to bail out and then his decision to attempt at a forced landing that ended tragically." He left a young wife who never remarried. On 12/10/41 he damaged a 109 T in low flight ( collision with a wire line and got an official reprimand according to violation of § 92 since this wasnt ordered, he simply had to escort a FW-58 and fly back to Sola airfield. 9 Bombers, one a B-24D northwest of Marettimo on 5 May, 1943. 47 victories in the West, including 16 in the Desert. Channel pilot. Harder made an emergency landing on 4 May, 1941 in his Bf 109F-2 Werk # 8085 "Black <0 at Maldeghem, inflicting 15% damage, and no injury to himself. Three days later, he was brought down by Flak in a JG-52 F-2 with no injury (Prien). 35% to F-2 Wk#9212 on 9/25/41. His first Channel victory, a Spitfire south of Bouckerque on 3 July, 1941. Killed 17 February, 1945 in a fatal crash in Wk# 784738 at Strausberg near Berlin. The cause was probably due to lack of oxygen. Added: Technical experts, who analized the wreckage, concluded that the piston of cylinder #12, penetrated the engine block; escaping fumes incapacitated Harder, who lost control of the ac (1945 Accidents List/S.Youngs). Harder was one of three Harder sons to become fighter pilots. All three were killed in action! His 40th victory, a Spitfire 25 km W of Albenga on 7 February, 1944. His 50th, a B-24 50 km S of Faenza on 25 April, 1944. His 55th victory, a P-51 over the Balkans on 28 July, 1944. Stationed at Mizil Romania in July, 1944. A triple victory, nos 59, 60 & 61, on 20 August, 1944; two Yak 9s and an Il-2 over Romania. His 63rd, a Yak 9 over Romania on 22 August, 1944. An Il-2 on 11 December, 1944. POW 31 May, 1945. Approximately 2000 missions. Interned in Great Britain. He served as a translator during his captivity, and was released on 23 May, 1946. Assignments Contd.: Stfkpt 2/KG-50(7/42), Kdr I/KG-50, II/KG-40(10/43), Kdr II/KG-40(2/44), 6/KG-200(2/45). Hans began his flying career in the German Civil Air Patrol in 1934 and then flew for a brief time with Lufthansa. He was selected as one of the first three pilots in the newly formed German Luftwaffe. Subsequently, he joined the Legion Condor flying in Spain. On 23 November, 1943, his aircraft released an Hs 293 glider bomb that hit MHT Rhona, killing nearly 1200 American servicemen, the greatest American loss at sea in Naval history. His Group Commander, Major Rudolph Mons, was killed during this operation. Hans took over as temporary Group commander until his official appointment in February, 1944. KilledInAction (KIA) 18 April, 1945 between Cottbus and Guben, in the Niederlausitz, when his Fw 190 was hit by Soviet flak in a dive, and crashed from 500 meters altitude. 964 missions including about 150 in the Fw 190. He had been nominated for the Oak Leaves.

Hans-Joachim Brand was shot down by Soviet flak on 18 April 1945 near Cottbus while flying a ground-attack mission. His Focke Wulf Fw 190F was hit by anti-aircraft fire at a height of 1,600 feet and he fatally crashed near Alteno/Luckau in the Spreewald. His body was never recovered. During his career he flew 964 missions and he had been nominated for the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, which was never approved.

KilledInAction (KIA) 6 November, 1944 near Dueren by AA fire from the 555th AA Bn. shortly after downing his 6th, a P-47 at low altitude. Shot down 3 September, 1944 along with Emil Lang and Alfred Gross. A promising Nachwuchs, and Lang's wingman, he made a forced landing at another Belgian field and caught a ride to Düsseldorf. Gross bailed out, badly wounded, but never returned to JG-26. Lang was killed in an inverted dive, hitting the ground and exploding ia a fireball, The victors were P-51s of 55th FG, 338th FS. One known early victory, a Spitfire at Fauville-en-Caux on 17 August, 1944. Another, a P-51 at Beauvais-Tille on 18 August, 1944. A P-47, later the same day, at Clermont. His 4th, a P-51 at Dinxperlo on 17 September, 1944 (Perry Claims). His 6th victory, a P-47 of 36FG, 22FS at Gey, SW of Düren, on 6 November, 1944, just minutes before his death.

The crew had been ordered to evacuate as many as possible from Windau to Kiel, however, they lost their direction in bad weather. Blum saw the harbor lights and thought it a safe harborand landed at 0500 hours. The passengers had been members of the 2nd Flak Abt.127, under the command of Oblt Claus Winkler of Nachrichtenabt-41. Winkler remained interned until 27 January, 1946, when he was permitted to return to West Germany. 26 of the 37 were turned over to the Russians as POWs, only 14 were returned from the East. He and his RO, Uffz Hans Wörl were seen exiting the G-2, but neither were repatriated years after the war. He may have been the victim of French Acr, Albert Littolf, his 14th and last victory. 400+ combat missions. His destroyer Group distinguished itself by its successful ground attacks during the Stalingrad Campaign. His RK was awarded for his operating an airfield which was completely surrounded by the Russians. Photo. Magnus Report. His first known Soviet victory, two LaGG-3s on 25 March, 1943.
