He had just launched a V-1 from under the wing when they were attacked by a Mosquito "HK 290" "RX-J" of RAAF No. 456 Sq., piloted by F/O F.S. Stevens and Nav. F/O W.A.H. Kellett. The Mosquito made two passes setting the port engine on fire. The He 111 went down in a shallow dive, flames spreading from the port engine, and hit the water, leaving a sea of flame. The entire crew of five were killed. Pilot Hillmann washed ashore on 27 November, 1944 near the coastal village of Callantsoog and was buried in Huisduinen Cemetery near Den Helder on 30 November, 1944. Remaining crew (KilledInAction (KIA)): Uffz Josef Jauernig, Gunner, washed ashore on the Dutch coast 26 November, 1944 and was buried in Bergen on 28 November, 1944. Fw Ludwig Klaiber, R/O, washed ashore on the Danish west coast on 31 Dec, 1944 and was buried in the Fovrfelt Cemetery on 2 January, 1945. Uffz Rudolf Martin, Obs. and Uffz Jürgen Hauser, Mech, have no known graves. Hillmann & Jauernig were transferred to Ysselstein Cemetery after the war. Source: Air War over Denmark.
